Our Heritage

Many of you will remember the original Legal Tender Restaurant, which was a landmark in our region and operated in this building from 1982 until 2006. We wanted to capture the local flavor of that great establishment, and also build on the history it captured.

We celebrate the mining legacy of our area, starting with our name, which comes from the Legal Tender Mine, located across the Interstate from us. The Legal Tender Mine employed most of the locals in the Clancy area from the 1870s through the 1920s. For Fifty years, families around here prospered from the silver and gold dug from the hill. It was hard work; it was dirty work, but it made our area strong and proud.

The Legal Tender Mine was developed in the spring of 1872 when a shaft was sunk to 160 feet and extensive surface facilities were built. The mine was developed to over 1,000 feet of underground workings. It would prove to be the most productive and with the richest ore of any in the district. The bes ore assayed at an amazing 10,000 ounces of silver per ton of rock. The mine’s output was about $40 million in today’s dollars. Dozen of other mines dotted the area, many finding rich veins of gold and zinc and silver. The creeks near us continue to have significant gold findings.
