Yesterday I saw a Happy Chicken truck on the road and immediately wondered, “Is that Don?”
Happy Chicken is one of our suppliers, and Don is one of the kindest delivery drivers we’ve ever had. As we both got on the interstate, I pulled up alongside the truck, and sure enough, it was him.
I gave him a nod and a smile. I’m not sure if he saw me, but it made me smile either way, because Don is one of those people who leaves that kind of impression.
The rest of my drive, it made me think about customer service and the importance of human connection.
Don delivers products to our shops, but he also brings something more with him: warmth, consistency, and the kind of friendliness that makes people feel seen.
To us, Don is Happy Chicken.
And in a lot of ways, Don reminds me of our baristas.
To our customers, our baristas are our business. They are the face, the feeling, and the experience people carry with them when they leave.
We live in a world that is changing quickly, with technology and AI becoming a bigger part of everyday life. But moments like this are a good reminder that human kindness still matters deeply. Maybe more than ever.
We can have great coffee, good systems, beautiful spaces, and all the tools in the world, but at the end of the day, people remember how they were treated.
We aren’t in the shops every day, so sometimes weeks go by before we personally see Don. But when we do, he always asks how we’re doing. He asks about our boys. He remembers. He cares.
That matters.
Our baristas and Don are a lot alike. They show up, they do the work, and through small moments of kindness, they make people feel welcome.
A delivery driver can shape how you feel about a supplier. A barista can shape how someone feels about a coffee shop.
And every kind interaction, whether it happens at the counter, at a delivery door, or even on the road, leaves an impression.
More than that, it leaves a feeling.
And that feeling is something only humans can give.
