Week 3 of the Radical Spring Challenge is here, and this week we're talking about the people who make a third place worth having: The regulars; The ones who know each other's names; The ones who started as strangers and kept showing up until they weren't anymore.

At La Terza, those customers are the reason we take the third place concept seriously. A good space can invite connection, but it's the people who actually create it.

This week, we're asking two things. First, identify five businesses in your community that function as real third places — places where people genuinely belong. Second, share this challenge with your favorite one.

Third places grow when people who care about them invest in each other. Tag a coffee shop, restaurant, bookstore, or barbershop that deserves a shout-out and let them know what they're doing right.

Week 2 of the Radical Spring Challenge is here — and we're moving from observation into action.

Last week, we asked you to slow down and notice what makes a coffee shop a strong third place. This week, the question gets personal. What is one thing about your business that you could shift to better serve your community?

It doesn't have to be big. At La Terza, some of our most meaningful changes have been quiet ones — rethinking how seating is arranged, how staff engage with regulars, what signals we're sending about whether people are welcome to stay. None of it happened all at once. It happened one intentional decision at a time.

The businesses that grow into genuine third places aren't the ones with the most resources. They're the ones willing to keep asking the question.

Week 1 of the Radical Spring Challenge starts today — and we're beginning with something simple: observation.

Ray Oldenburg coined the term "third place" in 1989 to describe the spaces in our communities that are neither home nor work. Libraries, parks, barbershops, cafés — places where all are welcome and conversation is encouraged. Places that hold a community together in ways most of us don't fully notice until they're gone.

A coffee shop that functions as a true third place doesn't get there by accident. It gets there through a series of small, intentional decisions about seating, music, atmosphere, how staff treats regulars, and how welcome a stranger feels walking in for the first time.

This week, we're asking you to slow down and observe. Walk into your own space and notice what's working. Walk into someone else's and pay attention to what makes you want to stay.

We're launching something Monday, and we'd love for you to be part of it.

It's called the Radical Spring Challenge — a 30-day social media challenge for coffee shops that want to be more than a place that serves great coffee.

Most coffee shop owners we talk to didn't open their doors just because they love coffee. They opened because they wanted to create a space for their community. A third place — somewhere that's not home and not work, where people can slow down, connect, and be neighbors again.

That kind of space doesn't build itself. It takes intention.
Over the next four weeks, we'll be sharing what that looks like in practice — what to look for, how to grow, and who else in your community is doing this well. Monday, we share the first challenge.
