Portside is located on the Pamlico River near historic Washington, North Carolina off Highway 17 on Whichard's Beach Road. Portside was developed in 1972 and the majority of the home sites were sold in 1974. This waterfront community provides a great family environment. restaurants that offer authentic Southern cuisine just a short distance away in Chocowinity, NC, Washington, NC or Greenville, NC. Portside is surrounded by stunning natural beauty and the vibrant heritage of the first town in the nation to be named in honor of President George Washington. As early as 1585, the first English explorers visited the area that would become Washington. However, it wasn't until the 1690's that the first settlements appeared. This region went by a number of names until 1712, when the county was named Beaufort after Henry Sumerset Duke of Beaufort. The historic waterfront district features buildings dating from 1780.
