FROM CHIPLEY HIGH SCHOOL TO A NEW CHAPTER IN THE ARTS

If these old brick walls could talk, they would have nearly a century of stories to tell.
Today, most of us know this property at 680 2nd Street in Chipley as the home of Spanish Trail Playhouse. But long before the lights came up on stage, this campus was filled with ringing bells, crowded hallways, Friday night football, teachers, friendships, graduations, and generations of Chipley students.
Built during the 1930s, this campus became the longtime home of Chipley High School. For decades, students walked these halls, gathered in the auditorium, ate in the cafeteria, played ball in the gym, and cheered on the Tigers from the athletic field behind the school.
The campus witnessed an incredible amount of history.
It stood through the Great Depression, World War II, the postwar years, segregation and integration, changing classrooms, growing enrollment, and generations of families who called Chipley home.
For many people in Washington County, this wasn't simply a school.
This was their school.
In 2000, Chipley High School's chapter on 2nd Street came to an end when students moved to the newer school campus on Brickyard Road.
But the old campus wasn't finished.
The buildings continued serving the community in different ways through educational programs, public services, community activities and other uses.
And then came a group of people who saw something in one particular part of the old school that others might have simply seen as an aging building.
They saw a stage.
They saw an auditorium.
They saw a place where the community could gather again.
And most importantly…
they saw something worth saving.
THE SPANISH TRAIL PLAYHOUSE STORY
In 2006, a group of community members began working to bring Spanish Trail Playhouse back to life.
One of the organization's early fundraisers was held inside the historic Chipley High School Auditorium — the same auditorium where generations of students had once performed, gathered and made memories.
Spanish Trail Playhouse officially incorporated in 2007, and by 2008, the organization had taken over the lease of the historic auditorium.
But it wasn't exactly Broadway-ready.
There was work to do.
A LOT of work.
Volunteers rolled up their sleeves. Community workdays were organized. Repairs were made. Spaces were cleaned. The auditorium slowly began coming back to life.
By 2009, much of the historic auditorium had been renovated, and once again audiences were sitting in those seats watching performances beneath the stage lights.
What had once been a school auditorium had found a new purpose.
And Spanish Trail Playhouse kept going.
Year after year.
Show after show.
Volunteer after volunteer.
The organization continued investing in the property — restoring the auditorium and lobby, replacing seating, improving restrooms, upgrading lighting, landscaping the grounds and caring for a piece of Chipley's history that could very easily have been lost.
Over time, that little theatre inside the old high school became something much bigger.
It became proof that these old buildings still had life left in them.
And in 2026, the story changed again.
After years of leasing and caring for part of the property, Spanish Trail Playhouse officially took ownership of the entire former Chipley High School campus on July 7, 2026.
Nearly five acres. Six buildings. One enormous piece of Chipley history.
The campus that once educated generations of students is now beginning its next chapter as the Spanish Trail Cultural Arts Center.
The vision reaches far beyond the stage.
The goal is to preserve this historic property while creating a place for theatre, arts education, workshops, recreation, community organizations, events, small businesses, classes, celebrations and gathering spaces.
The old cafeteria could one day serve new community functions.
The gym that once echoed with basketball games can continue bringing people together.
Old classrooms and hallways can become spaces filled with creativity again.
And at the heart of it all remains the historic auditorium — the room that helped start this entire preservation journey.
Just days after Spanish Trail Playhouse took ownership, dozens of volunteers came back to the campus once again, clearing rooms, organizing decades of accumulated items and beginning the enormous job of preparing these buildings for their next life.
That may be the best way to describe the story of this campus.
People keep showing up for it.
Students once showed up here to learn.
Teachers showed up here to teach.
Families showed up here for ballgames, graduations and performances.
And decades later, volunteers, performers, supporters and community members are still showing up — this time to make sure the place survives.
This photograph isn't simply an aerial view of some old buildings in Chipley.
You're looking at nearly a century of community history.
Thousands of footsteps have crossed those sidewalks.
Thousands of students have sat inside those classrooms.
Countless memories were made inside that gym, cafeteria, auditorium and athletic field.
And now, instead of watching this campus disappear, another generation has decided to write a new chapter for it.
From Chipley High School…
to Spanish Trail Playhouse…
to the Spanish Trail Cultural Arts Center.
The buildings may have changed purpose over the years.
But they have always belonged to the story of this community.
And thankfully…
that story isn't over yet. ❤️
