I have to work, so I am smoking a brisket!

“My Immigrant Experience”

As a child,
I stood at the altar of immigrants.
The kitchen altar.

My German Grandmother,
born in Bavaria,
making potato pancakes.

I stood patiently,
holding a piece of newspaper.

And soon I was hurrying to the kitchen table with a hot, crispy pancake,
that I would slide onto a plate and smother in applesauce.

A few days later,
while my mother was at her bookshop,
I stood next to Mrs. Magaña’s altar,
also holding a fold of newspaper.

Her sacrament?
A homemade flour tortilla, slathered in butter.

The hands that hold us.
the hands that feed us,

don’t know borders…

To the customers that came in, bought food and beer from us and then proceeded to pull off our Nor Cal Resist stickers and steal all our pamphlets, I have an answer to your fascism.

I decided that during the month of January, 20% of our food sales will be going to . That way, you have supported that which you hate.

Love and compassion always trumps hate, sometimes in ways you weren’t expecting…
