Different stands, different fillings, different ways of doing things. These moments from Guadalajara and elsewhere in Jalisco remind us how much there is to appreciate in a taco—and in the people preparing it.

For National Taco Day, we’re celebrating those taqueros alongside the team at our own taqueria here in Chesapeake. Our tacos carry our family’s connection to Jalisco, with birria taking a special place at the table.

It last episode we learned how everything began inside a small tienda on Battlefield, where customers kept asking Maria to cook.

Years later, people were traveling across Hampton Roads and asking to speak with someone from the family just to tell us the food reminded them of home.

That was when we understood La Hacienda had become more than our family’s restaurant. But becoming something bigger came with a new responsibility:

Capítulo 6: Todo empezó en Battlefield

Before La Hacienda was a restaurant, it was a small tienda on Battlefield Boulevard with a rack of Bimbo, chiles, and products our community couldn’t easily find.

Then people began asking María for food. She made tacos, pozole, and tamales and their demand eventually gave our family the confidence to open a small taquería.

Some of those first customers still sit at our tables today.

National Hispanic Heritage Month begins today and for us, heritage has never been something kept behind glass.
It lives in the food, the music and the people gathered around our tables.

Capítulo 5: California Dreamin’ looked like hard work
Before La Hacienda, Raul worked his way through California picking strawberries and peaches, painting, gardening, and taking whatever work came next. Each job moved him one step closer to the life our family would eventually build in Virginia.
Those years still live inside La Hacienda in the way we work, the food we prepare, and the people we welcome around our tables.

Cynthia remembers growing up in Mexico as a place where everyone knew one another. Neighbors were familiar. Family was always nearby. And so many memories were made around food.
Coming to the United States meant beginning again in a place where neither she nor her parents knew anyone.
We can’t recreate the home our family left behind. But we can carry forward what home felt like.
At La Hacienda, that feeling has slowly taken shape through familiar faces, families returning to the same tables, employees growing alongside us, and customers who no longer feel like strangers.
Over time, this became more than the restaurant our family built. It became a place where we could feel at home again and invite others into that feeling.
To every familiar face that keeps returning here at our chesapeake locations: you helped make La Hacienda feel like home.
Jalisco gave us our roots while Los Angeles gave us our vision And the 757 gave us our home.
