There is a great place called 墨爾本布蕾斯咖啡廳 Melbourne Press Cafe in Taipei. Not a veg place but they have some good veg options. It is super cute and the owner even sketched a picture of me and a fellow researcher I was with for lunch in chocolate sauce on a plate. Unlike the drawing, we were not holding hands, lol.

A very popular street snack in Taiwan is onion oil pancakes, or cōng yóu bǐng, 蔥油餅. They aren't super healthy, but they are popular. And they are yummy. Imagine if phylo dough and pizza dough had a child, and you have the pancake portion of this. And then you add an egg, basil, spice, and meat if you like, to this, and then roll like a burrito or fold like a taco, and eat it. I love these, but I don't eat them very often. These pics are from a place in Taipei on Yongkang St., a popular market area in the Da'an District of Taipei.

One of my favorite snacks in Taiwan is tofu pudding. Much of Asia has this snack but it is different everywhere. Taiwan style tofu pudding is silky smooth. There are a lot of bad places to get this snack but Mata Tofu Pudding in Dongmen, Taipei, is by far the best I’ve had. The topping is peanuts or peanut brittle, which are farmed in various places in Taiwan. I think these come from Green Island. If in Taipei, it is worth it to find a good bowl of tofu pudding.

Great donuts at Eatdonuts in Taipei. They mostly have croissants and other French pastries, but the sea salt caramel crème filled donut is yummy! I only got one.

I've been thinking about applesauce on toast for a while and I need your input.

It seems that most of my Adventist friends have this breakfast on their menu every now and then, or had it regularly when they were kids. And my non-SDA friends think this is a weird breakfast food. And I'm thinking of doing some research on this, and I wonder if this food combo comes from the sanitarium culture.

So I wonder if you can comment on a few things to help me frame my research. Do you (or did you when you were a kid) eat applesauce on toast? And are you SDA? Specifically, are you multi-generational SDA, from North America, and what is your ethnic background?

Or if you DO eat applesauce on toast and are not connected to an SDA lineage, I'd like to hear about this as well.

I suspect that the roots of both the applesauce and toast are both coming from German or British culinary heritage, and the solidified in the sanitarium culture and health reform movement that Adventists embraced.

And what variety do you eat? I grew up eating only butter on the toast with applesauce. Marla grew up eating with with peanut butter on the toast, which seems to be also a very SDA thing to do... adding nut butters. Friends of ours eat it with red hots on top of the applesauce. Any other varieties?
