At 95, Jimmy Carter needed 14 stitches after falling at home.

That still wasn't enough to keep him away from a Habitat for Humanity build.

The former president had already been through years of health setbacks. In 2015, he was treated for melanoma that had spread to his liver and brain.

Then in May 2019, he fell while preparing to go turkey hunting and broke his hip, requiring surgery.

A few months later, on October 6, he fell again at his home in Plains, Georgia.

Carter later explained that the fall left him with a black eye and required 14 stitches in his forehead.

But he had somewhere he wanted to be.

That evening, Carter appeared at the opening of the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Nashville.

The following morning, bruised and bandaged, he was back on the construction site helping Habitat for Humanity volunteers and future homeowners build 21 houses.

Carter told the crowd that coming to Nashville to build homes had been his "number one priority."

He and Rosalynn had spent decades working alongside Habitat volunteers, helping turn the organization into one of the most recognizable housing charities in the world.

Jimmy Carter died in 2024 at the age of 100, leaving behind a humanitarian legacy that extended far beyond his presidency.
