Coming soon: Something New! The vegan takeout operation that occupied the building for 2.5 years left a few months ago. I briefly considered selling the building but changed my mind, decided I want to stay on the block. I'm working with two people from the Belvoir area, Lezlie and Sam, to share the space for various purposes. Lezlie has a line of gluten-free food products. She currently tables at the Grace Farmers' market. Sam will do a coffee service. He is refurbishing the espresso machine. It will be available for ad hoc events. I will have some consignment from local farmers' market vendors, like Bill and Becky Ensinger's line of soaps. And I hope to bring back regular weekend music, which had just been getting started when the shutdown happened, and is critically missing from the Belvoir/Brainerd area since Andrew Kelsey died during the pandemic and Charles & Myrtles stopped being a wonderful thing. Lezlie and I have been in there cleaning and painting. I had to do some major plumbing work. There is more painting and whatnot to do, but perhaps in the next month operations will get started. I'm grateful on balance for the vegan op for being there, but it was far short of what I wanted to be happening in this unique neighborhood spot. It was rarely open and not welcoming to people when it was. They focused on takeout, and were unwelcoming as a style, a grumpy goth thing -- which worked for them. In this next phase it will be community focused, welcoming and open for people.

The Ugly Tree building has been occupied by Linley & Zack and their vegan offerings under the name Your Local Seitanists. They are having a soft-opening *today*, Sept 18 from 3-6 PM. They'd been doing great businsess in a difficult location (Highland Park area under the name Willow St Deli) even through this stressful pandemic by serving mostly takeout. Thanks to my church mate Kristina for making the connection. I was acquainted with Zack & Linley from the Grace Saturday market where they sold their products for a couple of years before opening Willow St. I talked to them about my experience making gluten (seitan) in Austin in the early 80s, selling it to the then brand new Whole Foods. So it's a rhyming serendipity. They've got a loyal following here in Chattanooga, so if you are interested in vegan foods, this is happening where you live. The Ugly Tree name will have a virtual form by way of some development work I am doing.

It's been about the proverbial 40 days and nights since we mothballed the cafe. Still looking for the proverbial dove to guide us to the new land -- government timelines don't fly. I applied for the PPP program, fully qualified on paper and spirit, though not for much, and not in-hand yet. There is little communication about it and no reassurance. They say it might not happen for many. This week should tell that story.

MEET THE OWNER!
Happy birthday to our owner, Richard! When he is not working at Ugly Tree Cafe, he is working as a software engineer, reading, or going to contradance at the Brainerd United Methodist Church. He loves to drink a caffe breve, and his favorite thing on the menu is the breakfast burrito. Richard opened Ugly Tree Cafe because he wanted to create a friendly space where people could meet, socialize, and be creative. We look forward to opening this space up again and seeing everyone!

This is Jared Herzog singing a cover of "Fly Me to the Moon." We are hoping to have Jared come and perform at the cafe soon! In the meantime, enjoy this little song from the safety of your home. Jared was on Team Legend in season 17 of the Voice and is often found gigging in Florida or leading worship in Tennessee.
