The Pie Chest

The Pie Chest The Pie Chest offers quaint, humble, and delicious comfort in a slice. Frequently Asked Questions:

Q - What pies do you offer? What about your daily selection?
(241)

A - We offer savory pot pies, breakfast hand pies, sweet pies by the slice and whole, both year-round staples and seasonal offerings. Our pot pies are 5 inches in diameter. Our sweet pies are 9 inches in diameter. We offer seasonal cobbler and homemade ice cream. Q - How often does your menu change? A - We have four menus per year that change with the season. We offer 8 or 9 types of sweet pie dai

ly, savory pot pies and hand pies with meat and vegetarian options. Our menu seeks to reflect what is seasonal and fresh, particularly what is grown in our area of Virginia. Q - What are your prices? A - Whole pies range in price from $26 - $30

Q - Do you have whole pies for sale daily? A - Yes, we do sell whole sweet pies, but it is first-come, first-serve. We have a limited number available to buy in the shop and the choices reflect what we are running in the case for slices. If you desire a specific type of pie from the menu, please make a special order! Q - How do I place a special order? A - We prefer you call the shop at 434.977.0443. We are a small, busy shop and may not be able to answer the phone immediately, but please leave a brief message with your name and contact info so we can return your call. We also ask for 48 hours notice - our kitchen and staff are small, and we have a production schedule set in place. The more advance notice we receive, the easier for us to fulfill! Q - Can I order a larger-sized version of the savory pot pies? A - Yes, you can, however, by special order only and a minimum 72 hour notice is required. Family-size savory items are limited to the production and shop schedule. Please call the shop to verify what is available and when. Family-sized pies are $30 and serve 6-8. Q - Do you offer gluten-free and vegan options? A - Not at this time. Q - What do you use in your pie crust? A - We are 100% butter. In fact, our crust ingredients are simple - flour (locally milled in Ashland, VA), sugar, salt, and butter. We do not use Crisco or lard in any of our products. Q - Do you cater weddings and/or events? A - We do! Please email us at [email protected] to begin the process of booking an event. Q - Do you have in-house seating? A - Due to COVID, we are not currently offering dine-in services. We are a small cafe with seating for up to 24 people. We also feature a full coffee bar through our partnership with Lone Light Coffee. Q - Do you deliver? A - We do not do individual deliveries but we offer delivery (for a small fee) for our catered/booked events.

I'm gonna be honest for a minute. Some real talk.
You might think that this far into my baking/cooking career that the jitters, imposter syndrome, and anxiety that no one is going to show up to my events would be far passed.
It most decidedly is not.
I still struggle. Every single time. I battle with mitigating hopeful expectations for my own mental health.
But you all just keep showing up. ❀️
And I need you to understand something.
As much as you may enjoy what I do, I enjoy seeing your faces. I enjoy your hugs, your joy, and seeing you. Being human is about being connected. And food has brought us together.
Please don't stop showing up for me.
I won't stop showing up for you.
Rachel

Ps. I suck at taking pictures at things I do. It's too busy, I forget, blah blah blah. The best moments are lived anyway, right? Here are a few from Pie Chest Fest, including some of my helpers, some of the best people I know.

Greetings from New Joyzee!

I'll be leading a workshop on how food tells your story this weekend and talking about the theology of risk (and cooking) for First Thursday dinner next week.

I can tell my story in 5 bites:
A sugared strawberry
Cheese toast
Confit tomatoes
Buttermilk biscuits
Lemon shortbread

Grateful to be back at my alma mater to share the gospel of food and eating, drinking, being merry as an act of resistance.

For the dinner next week, I'm making our Crab and Sweet Corn pot pies but playing around with an Old Bay and Chive pie crust. If it's a hit, look for it this summer!

Xo.
