You might be wondering what National Pet Day (April 11th) has to do with afternoon tea... It’s really quite simple. Some of my earliest tea parties (when I was just six or seven) were organized for our family pet. We stuck to garden parties on the deck since Talley, a sweet Jack Russell Terrier, wasn’t allowed at the dining room table. In fact, my understanding of what tea parties truly meant started then. Talley was my best friend and companion. She was gentle and patient and brought immense joy into my young life. Our tea parties together were simple makeshift affairs (we weren’t even drinking tea) and yet they are some of my fondest memories. The beauty of the moment was doing something special together - just the two of us. In many ways those memories helped to shape my vision for Pétale. Gigi, our five year old Jack Russell, may not enjoy the quiet delicacy of eating dog kibble off miniature plates in the way same way Talley did, but she is my constant companion and a daily source of joy. She slows me down and reminds me to sit and watch the world with fresh eyes (even if it just for a few minutes). This is one of the photos from a shoot we did for Pétale a few years ago with and it remains one of my favorite images from the day. Happy National Pet Day to everyone lucky enough to share their lives with a loving pet! ❤️ 🍃

A RITUAL FOR WEARY SPIRITS: Did you know that Pétale has a monthly newsletter? “The Whole Leaf” shares behind the scenes insights into afternoon tea, personalized tea rituals, and slow entertaining. If you are a newsletter subscriber you probably learned a little bit about my newest tea ritual: a ritual for weary spirits. The middle of winter is a difficult time for many people. The buzz of the holidays is over. Spring is still weeks (even months) away in many parts of the country. The gray skies, cold temperatures, and saddle brown landscapes can drain on our spirits. And while the redeeming qualities of a hot cup of tea are many, sometimes even tea leaves need a boost. If any of this resonates with you, try this simple tea ritual today. Right now, in fact. 1) Heat up the kettle and choose a tea that suits your mood. 2) While the kettle heats up, warm your cup or mug. Then, find a coffee table book, photo book, or cook book that is full of photos, sketches, or artwork: beautiful flowers, luxurious furnishings, dreamy landscapes, sumptuous dishes, and exotic ingredients. No non-fiction. No book club titles. No how-to manuals. 3) Pour yourself a cup of tea and find a comfortable spot to sit down. Leave your phone, laptop, and smartwatch somewhere else. 4) For the time it takes to drink your tea, flip through the book slowly. You won’t be here long so enjoy the colors and textures of the photos or drawings. Let your mind wander over the pages. No timers. No deadlines. Once you’ve finished your tea, close the book and return to your day. It’s that simple. Want to know what books I’m reading above? 3 THINGS I DO ON REPEAT TO CREATE THE PERFECT CUP OF TEA: Some things are worth doing again and again. And again… Tip 1: Use fresh cold water. Start by heating fresh cold water (preferably filtered) every time you prepare a cup of tea. When water boils it looses oxygen and allows particulates (like minerals) to condense and collect. This can affect the flavor of tea significantly which is why heating fresh cold water every time makes the better cup. If there is warm water in the kettle, throw it out and fill up with fresh. Tip 2: Heat the cup or mug. Even if I’m not steeping a whole teapot, I always warm the teacup or mug with a little water just before it comes to boil. This warms the porcelain or glass ensuring that it will keep my tea hotter longer. Never pour a hot liquid into a cold cup. Most tea is best enjoyed as close to the steeping temperature as possible. A cold cup or mug of will lower that temperature significantly. Preheating the cup will ensure you can enjoy the tea longer and produce the best flavor. Tip 3: Use whole leaf tea. I love whole leaf tea for a variety of reasons. The first, is of course the taste. When using whole leaf tea always provide as much room as possible for the leaves to expand and release their flavor. Avoid small tea balls or diffuser spoons. I usually prefer a stainless steel infuser for mugs or to toss the leaves directly into the teapot. Disposable diffuser bags are good too but opt for the largest size you can comfortably use in your mug to ensure the leaves can expand inside the bag. Plus, whole leaf tea can often be used multiple times. The flavor and intensity will be different each time but some teas are prized for their second and third steep. What tip will you try today?

What better way is there to celebrate this season of joy and light than with peace, softness, and quiet musings on the year thus far? Afternoon tea takes many forms but the simplest of these is perhaps the greatest: a tray set thoughtfully with seasonal touches and a delicious pot of tea. Create the perfect canvas for gathering before, during, and after the Holiday Season with simple everyday luxuries you already have on hand. This thrifted wooden tray with brass details takes on a new life when set with classic Blue Italian cups and saucers. Blue and white china always looks festive and timeless no matter the decor. A glistening glass teapot by lets the gorgeous color of Earl Grey Classic by shine A pretty cream and sugar set (also thrifted) adds an extra layer of whimsy and elegance. Pétale wishes you a restful Holiday full of special time with friends and family. Thank you for sharing in our journey this season.
