For 75 years, The Nook has been part of the rhythm of Charlottesville — through changing downtown streets, generations of UVA students, longtime locals, workday lunches, weekend breakfasts and countless meals shared around these tables.
We asked Rev. Alex Joyner, Pastor of Charlottesville First United Methodist Church just up the mall from us, to reflect on The Nook and its place in the community. His memories span generations, from his days as a UVA student to bringing people to The Nook today.
“There is something reassuring about the persistence of The Nook Diner. Pre-mall and post-mall, it has been a place of warmth and comfort for generations.”
He remembers The Nook as “a little like home” during his UVA years, and today appreciates the outdoor space, the evolving specials menu ( the Shakshuka being especially note worthy) — and, of course, the grits.
“Alongside the photos of old time C’ville you can still get the grits, which are the best in the city. (I’ve taste-tested my way through all the rest.)”
We’re grateful for the people who have and continue to make The Nook part of their Charlottesville story and for the stories that remind us why this place has lasted for 75 years.
