To Our Casual Pint Family,
Well… this is one of those messages I never hoped to write, but here we are.
After eight years, The Casual Pint is closing.
This wasn’t an easy decision, and it definitely wasn’t a quick one. The last three years have been tough. COVID changed a lot of things, and even though we kept the doors open and did our best to adapt, the business never quite made it back to where it was before. Costs kept rising, margins kept shrinking, and every month felt like standing in the aisle at Publix doing mental math and quietly deciding what can wait until next week.
To keep things running, I worked two full-time jobs, with only one paying a wage. Not because I wanted to, and definitely not because I thought it was a great idea — just because that’s what it took to keep the lights on and make sure my employees were paid. At some point, I stopped asking myself if it was reasonable and just said, “Well… we’ll get through this.” (Which, turns out, has its limits.)
I stayed because I cared — a lot! This place mattered to me. And like most Iowans, when something matters, you don’t quit on it easily. You keep showing up. You keep trying. You just put your head down and do the work and hope for the best.
But when our last original employee — someone who had been here since the beginning and helped shape what The Casual Pint became — moved on, it quietly hit me. Not in a dramatic way. Just one of those moments where you think, “Yeah… this season might be done.” I realized I wasn’t really fighting for the business anymore. I was fighting for how it used to feel. And as much as I love the past, it doesn’t keep the doors open.
This place has been a huge part of my life. It’s where I’ve poured my time, energy, and heart and many, many b**rs—often at the expense of sleep, social life, sanity, and yes, sometimes my own happiness and personal finances. Letting go is hard. It’s bitter and sad, but it’s also necessary. And it’s strangely comforting to finally be honest with myself about it.
As I step away, I’m hopeful I can return to a more normal life—traveling a bit, focusing more on selling real estate, watching my beloved Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubbies and enjoying the simple things in life I once took for granted. But, even more than that, I hope to finally have time to watch my grandsons grow up without missing the little but very big moments in life while not having to check my phone every five minutes for the next call-out or problem. And hopefully, I’ll have a little more money in my own pocket instead of everyone else’s.
Closing The Casual Pint doesn’t close the memories, the friendships, or the love. Every laugh, every conversation, every shared moment is etched into my life forever. Every person who walked through those doors mattered. You made this place what it was, and you gave me more than I could ever repay.
I leave with a heart full of gratitude, pride, and—yes—sorrow. It’s hard to let go of something you gave everything to. But I also leave with hope. Hope that the people, the memories, and the spirit of this place will continue in ways I can’t yet imagine. And hope that life, after all of this, still has room for joy, laughter, family, and the simple pleasures that remind you why it’s all worth it.
Our final day will be 12/27/25 so let's, in pure Casual Pint fashion, gather together one last time to enjoy the live music of THRILL on the evening of 12/27/25.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Thank you for believing in us. Thank you for making The Casual Pint a home, a community, and a story I will carry for the rest of my life.
With all my heart,
Bruce Allen
