Vivian Howard didn't always love oysters. As a kid, oyster season meant trading Shirley Temples at her favorite restaurant for a rushed, no-soda night at the oyster bar. She hated them then

That changed over time. Years ago, her growing curiosity about oysters took her to Cedar Island to learn more about North Carolina’s mariculture oyster industry, and later inspired her family’s first-of-many oyster roast back home in Deep Run.

That's the thing about the foods that define a place. They don't always start as love stories. Sometimes they start as the thing standing between you and a soda — and end up as the thing you can't imagine your table without.

Consider this our case for fall crudo: silky tuna, sweet pear, crunchy pepitas, Fresno pepper and a brown butter citrus dressing.
Cool fish, warm brown butter, autumn fruit and a little heat. Fall looks pretty good from here.

How many of us have a relative that swears by peanuts in a Pepsi-Cola? It all started with the worst job in the to***co business: topping and suckering. And after hours of toiling in the rows of sticky, itchy plant, a dusty pickup would lumber down the dirt path that lined the to***co field with a cooler of cold bottles of Pepsi and a box of Lance peanut packets.

“Hot, hungry workers, many of them children, knew their break began once they’d topped and suckered to the end of the row where the pickup sat. They worked fast and gathered under a shade tree. Sticky to***co gum covered every hand and arm, so despite the urge to sit down and throw back handfuls of salty peanuts, they took to dumping the slender sleeve into the glass bottle of Pepsi and turning up the bottle for a salty, sweet, and crunchy swig. The combination offered energy and made the snack last longer than if they had tipped the bag of nuts or the bottle of soda back separately.”

Reviews like this make all the early mornings worth it. Thank you for noticing the little things — the butter, the whipped cream, the jam — all made in-house, and it shows.
