Every stitch on these bags was done by hand by the women of Las Adelitas.

Café Feminista was never meant to be just recognition. It’s about creating tangible feminist futures with women growing coffee all around the world.

This time last year, Lee and Amaris traveled to Hidalgo, México, to visit our friend Montze Olvera, and the bags were waiting for them. They hang in our office now as a reminder of why we do this.

Joyva’s halva started out on Lower East Side pushcarts, a taste of home for families who’d just arrived.

Four generations later, the family is still at it in Bushwick.

Now their tahini is in the cold foam on our Iced Maple Latte.

Bianca’s order is an iced chai with oat milk and butter pecan cold foam, plus a little cold brew for the chocolate notes. She didn’t drink coffee at all before Joe.

She runs our Dumbo and Bergen cafes and is training for her first NYC Marathon. Back when she was a barista at Dumbo, she worked the bar with Allison. “It’s like, all right, we have the giggles all day,” she says.

For one week every month, all of our cafés brew a coffee hand picked by our roasting team. This month: Café Feminista, from Montze Olvera in Hidalgo, Mexico.

James, our director of roasting, walks us through this one. Montze founded Las Adelitas, a feminist ecological collective that highlights Indigenous and campesina women in coffee, and built Mexico’s first rural school for human rights for women.

Happy National Coffee Day!

We talk about coffee all day, every day, so we’re not going to pretend this is the one day a year it suddenly matters more. But it is a good excuse to celebrate the people behind it.

There are a lot of hands in a cup before it gets to you. Producers growing and processing coffee, relationships that are built over years, the roasting team in Queens, cafe teams tasting, dialing in and making drinks, and then all the people who come through the doors every day.

That part has always mattered at Joe. The coffee has to be good, obviously, but so does the way people feel around it.

Jonathan and Danny Meyer have known each other for years, and a lot of what Danny wrote about in Setting the Table has been part of the conversation at Joe for a long time. Good hospitality doesn’t need to be complicated. It’s paying attention. It’s caring about the details. It’s making people feel comfortable.

So it feels like a fun coincidence that Danny’s new book, What Could Possibly Go Right?, is out today too.
