A Look Back at Bender's History: An Undefeated Season!

Bender's has always been about more than great food. For generations, our roots have run deep in the Canton community, from the dining room to the ball field!

This week's trip down memory lane takes us back to the summer of 1983, when the Bender's Restaurant baseball team made headlines in The Canton Repository / CantonRep.com after completing a perfect 15-0 season!

Competing in the American League (ages 9–10) of the Canton North Avondale Hot Stove League, these young athletes had a season worth remembering.

Among the faces in this photograph are a young Jon Jacob, pictured in the center holding the team's award, and coach Jerry Jacob, continuing the Jacob family's longstanding tradition of supporting local athletics.

More than four decades later, this little newspaper clipping reminds us that Bender's history isn't just found within our walls. It's woven into the generations of families, friendships, and community traditions that make Canton so special.

Recognize any familiar faces? Were you part of the team, or do you remember cheering them on? We'd love to hear your memories!

For generations, the Jacob family and Bender’s Tavern have shared a special connection to Canton’s rich sporting history.

While John Jacob purchased Bender’s Tavern in 1932, the relationship between the Jacob and Bender families began through a shared love of fishing. Ed Bender and John Jacob were connected through Camp Kagel, a fishing retreat that helped bring the two men together and ultimately became an important part of Bender’s history. That connection lives on today through our beloved Camp Kagel Walleye, a longtime favorite on the Bender’s menu.

The Jacob family's sporting traditions extend well beyond fishing. In 1923, the Jacob Athletic Club captured the City Indoor Baseball League championship, bringing home the Daily News Trophy.

The family's connection to football is equally significant. Bender’s has long been associated with Canton's professional football heritage, from the early days when Jim Thorpe was known to visit the tavern to the establishment of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1963, Wilbur Jacob helped establish the Pro Football Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, which held its very first meeting at Bender’s Tavern.

Golf has also been a part of the Jacob family’s sporting traditions, reflecting a lifelong appreciation for athletics, friendly competition, and the friendships that sports create.

And today, that tradition continues with a new generation!

We are excited to share that Jessica Jacob, a sophomore on the Canton Central Catholic girls varsity soccer team, has been nominated for The Canton Repository’s Stark County Athlete of the Week! ⚽

Jessica earned her nomination after scoring four goals and recording an assist in recent victories over Waterloo and Ravenna.

From the fishing waters of Camp Kagel and the Jacob Athletic Club to the football legends who gathered at Bender’s, sports have always been woven into our family’s story.

Now we're asking our Bender's family and friends to help us cheer on the next generation!

🗳️ Please vote for Jessica Jacob for Stark County Athlete of the Week!

Today marks a special anniversary in Canton history. 🏈

On September 17, 1920, just a few blocks from Bender’s Tavern, 14 men gathered inside Ralph Hay’s Hupmobile Showroom in Downtown Canton and formed the American Professional Football Association — the organization that would later become the National Football League.

More than a century later, Canton remains at the heart of professional football as the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Bender’s is proud to have shared in so much of that history. Since 1902, our doors have welcomed generations of Canton residents, football fans, Hall of Famers, visitors, and guests who have come downtown to celebrate the city and the game.

Today, the former Hupmobile site at 201 Cleveland Ave. SW is home to the Frank T. Bow Federal Building and the first installation of The Eleven, a walkable series of public art pieces throughout Downtown Canton commemorating eleven defining moments from professional football’s first century.

As one of Canton’s longtime downtown landmarks, we are proud to be part of a community whose history helped shape America’s game.

Happy anniversary to the birthplace of professional football. 🏈
