Here’s to a staff luncheon, courtesy of a DoorDash customer named Shonda who called to ask about the race of our cooking staff after receiving their order (yes, this really happened - and this isn't the first time either!).

When she found out several of our kitchen staff are Hispanic, she demanded a refund because she "didn't want them making her food."

For that harassing phone call—and the time we had to spend disputing the chargeback with DoorDash who ultimately granted her refund anyway—we decided the best response was to put the full value of her order toward a fresh steak luncheon for our kitchen team. Not only did they make your food, Shonda, but you directly paid for their steak lunch! There's no better way to combat hate than with generosity.

Like most restaurant teams, our crew comes from diverse backgrounds—multiple nationalities, ages ranging from 15 to 70+, and vastly different life experiences. They show up early every day to hand-peel potatoes, hand-cut collards, and cook real food from scratch in an industry that has largely shifted to frozen "heat n' eat" products from national distributors.

In today's labor market of chronic short-staffing everywhere, there is no space for disrespect toward the remaining hard-working people who show up day-in and day-out to serve our community just because of their race.

Unfortunately, delivery apps like Doordash leave local businesses with zero recourse against this kind of behavior, placing the entire burden of proof on us in disputing refunds. They won't even allow us to block people like Shonda. Review platforms like Yelp and Google also give us no legitimate way to remove inflammatory or fraudulent feedback, even when that feedback is outspokenly based on things like a staff member's race, despite using that feedback to determine search ranking.

The only way we can fight back is by crowding out the noise with YOUR positive support.
