Anchor Bar’s story began in 1964 in Buffalo, New York, when Teressa Bellissimo accidentally created the first Buffalo Chicken Wing by deep frying the chicken wings and tossing them in a secret sauce. Since then, Anchor Bar has become a globally recognized sensation, earning the James Beard Foundation’s America’s Classics Award in 2003. Anchor Bar History Friday – Anchor Bar Menu items that stand the test of time – Iconic WNY menu items in addition to the Buffalo Chicken Wing.

Established in 1935, the Anchor Bar menu was full of American, Italian and seafood dishes before the Buffalo Chicken Wing was invented in 1964. If you had a chance to check out our history post about our vintage menus, you’d most likely see similarities on our menu today.

Through the years, Anchor Bar has continued to maintain the history of popular menu items that are known as WNY favorites! For starters, in WNY, pizza and wings form an iconic culinary pairing. Customers typically ordered both together making it a great family meal. Why not have pizza with wings?

Speaking of pizza, let’s talk about “cup & char” pepperoni on our pizza. Cup & char pepperoni originated in Buffalo, NY, in 1931. This is a staple that has been part of our menu for many years.

Another pizza favorite to mention is the famous Pizza Logs. The Original Pizza Log® was officially invented and established in 1991 in Niagara Falls, NY. This handheld appetizer and favorite kids’ meal is a crispy egg roll stuffed with fresh mozzarella and pepperoni, served with marinara for dipping.

Haddock fish frys have been a long-time seafood favorite on our Anchor Bar menu. WNY is most known for Fish Fry Fridays. This dish is served with fried haddock accompanied with various sides. Anchor Bar serves fish frys daily and are a very popular seafood item on our menu.

When you think of Buffalo, of course you think of Buffalo wings, but that also makes us think about Beef-on-Weck originated in the late 1800s! Our Roast Beef on Weck is nice slow-roasted beef served on a traditional kimmelweck roll with caraway seed and coarse salt, served alongside some au jus and horseradish so you can make it perfect for YOUR tastebuds.

From our famous wings to these longtime favorites, the Anchor Bar menu has something for everyone. Many of these dishes have been part of our story for generations, and we’re proud to continue serving the flavors that helped make the Anchor Bar what it is today. Anchor Bar History Friday – What famous guests has the Anchor Bar Served?
Anchor Bar has had the honor of welcoming and serving countless guests over the years, including many well-known and celebrated personalities. Each guest has been a meaningful part of our history. The photos on our walls paint the picture of many of those celebrities and VIP guests that visited to taste the Buffalo Wing where it all started in 1964.

Through the years, many Buffalo Bills players along with numerous NFL players and coaches from around the league have dined with us to enjoy our World-Famous Original Buffalo Wings. Just to name a few past Buffalo Bills players that are displayed on our walls are the following: Brooker Edgerson, no. 24 and legendary Bills cornerback from 1962 to 1969, Darryl Talley, All-Pro linebacker for the Bills in the early 90s, Jim Kelly, Bills quarterback in 1997, and John Davis, starting right guard for the Bills in the early 90s, and many more!

In addition to some NFL history, we have numerous historical photos of players and teams from the NHL, NBL, NBA, NLS along with wrestling, car racing, boxing and many more sports teams. We have over 500 photos of history during our 90 years from when the Anchor Bar Restaurant was established. We will continue naming our famous guests throughout the year. Stay tuned!

Previously on a different edition of Anchor Bar History Friday, we talked about the rich entertainment history at the Anchor Bar. Many famous musical groups, like The Jimmy Gibson Trio, Carol McLaughan, Al Tinney, George Clark and more, have performed for our Anchor Bar customers. There are some more famous musical stars that have stopped by the Anchor Bar, not even to perform, but to enjoy the home of the Original Buffalo Wing! Our historical photos include Brittney Spears, Willie Nelson, Jerry Mathers, Elvis Presley, Ringo Starr and John Lennon.

The list of famous visitors to the Anchor Bar doesn’t stop there. Additional celebrities that we have had the pleasure of meeting and serving includes Earl Campbell, legendary Pro Football Hall of Fame running back, playing mostly in his native state of Texas, John Candy, Canadian actor and comedian, Petri Hawkins-Byrd, television personality and Bailiff Byrd from “Judge Judy”, Richard Simmons, professional fitness coach, Kenny Rogers, legendary country music singer, just to name a few.

These are just a few photos we proudly display on our historical walls in Buffalo and throughout all our Franchise Locations.

Of course, the Anchor Bar is for everyone to enjoy. You don’t need to be a celebrity to stop in and taste our Original Buffalo Wings along with the variety of sauce and dry rub selections. You also do not need to be in Buffalo to enjoy them either! You can visit any one of our franchise locations listed below!

Anchor Bar History Friday – Vintage Anchor Bar Menus

Long before Buffalo Wings were on menus across the country, they were being served right here in Buffalo at Frank & Teressa’s Anchor Bar. Let’s take a look back at how things have changed over the years.

The prices alone tell a story!

How about 10 Original Buffalo Wings for $4.75? Or 20 for $6.44 and 50 for $17.50?

Wings were just part of the menu! You could enjoy a plate of Homemade Lasagna for $10, Fettuccini Alfredo for $9, a 12 oz. Strip Steak for $13, or a Caesar Salad for $5.25.

Pizza? Small Cheese & Pepperoni for $7 or a Large for $10
And don't forget dessert! New York Style Cheesecake with strawberries and real whipped cream for just $3.50

The menu even offered a wide selection of b**r, cocktails and w**e — making Anchor Bar a place where you could come in for dinner, drinks, a plate of Buffalo Wings, or all three!

These old Anchor Bar menus weren’t just about the food—they were full of fun, entertainment, and Buffalo personality. Alongside the menu items, diners could enjoy trivia questions, jokes, and classic comic strips, like Crock and Blondie.

The menus also highlight Anchor Bar’s lively atmosphere, with live jazz on Friday and Saturday nights, a full selection of b**r, cocktails and w**e, and even Anchor Bar wing sauce and frozen wings available to take home.

But perhaps the most interesting part isn't the prices or the entertainment or the comics. It's seeing the Original Buffalo Chicken Wings sitting right there on the menu as part of the restaurant's identity and how much of the Anchor Bar experience was already there: wings, Italian-American favorites, homemade pasta, pizza, steak, seafood, sandwiches, desserts, drinks.

The menu proudly calls Anchor Bar the “Home of the Original Buffalo Chicken Wings” and, of course, how it all happened that one night in March of 1964.
From a Buffalo restaurant on Main Street to a food tradition known far beyond Buffalo, the menu has changed—but the history on these pages remains.

Anchor Bar History – How did Chicken Wings Become a Football Season Staple?

With the first Bills game of the season on Sunday, September 13th, what better time to dive into the history behind how chicken wings became a football season staple! As we know, Teressa Bellissimo invented the Buffalo wing in 1964 by deep-frying leftover chicken wings, tossing them in a secret sauce and serving them with celery and blue cheese. Who would have thought that this would become the ultimate game day finger food!

Wings started to go national in the 1980s as Americans began to start buying boneless chicken breasts, chicken wings started to become an inexpensive surplus for poultry producers. Because of how inexpensive chicken wings were, sports bars started to capitalize on them. The spicy flavor of the wings drove customers to buy more and more b**r to offset the heat. This obviously created a massive profit engine for bar owners. The demand for chicken wings continued to grow alongside America's love of sports. According to the USDA, Americans consumed an average of just 32.6 pounds of chicken per person in 1967. Today, that number has risen to approximately 90.1 pounds per person—a 176% increase.

In the 1990s, the Buffalo Bills had four consecutive Super Bowl appearances and put the city of Buffalo and its signature food in front of millions of television viewers. The USDA estimates that in 2015, the U.S. chicken industry produced approximately 28.5 billion chicken wing portions. At least 5.6% of those—about 1.6 billion wings—were marketed during the week leading up to the Super Bowl. With an estimated 115 million viewers that year, that worked out to roughly 14 wings per viewer!

What started with a simple idea at Anchor Bar in Buffalo has become a nationwide tradition. From a neighborhood bar on Main Street to game-day tables across the country, the Buffalo wing has become synonymous with football season. So as the Bills kick off another season, we're proud to celebrate the food that started it all—right here in Buffalo.
