๐ŸŒŽโœจ Happy Pan American Day, everyone! โœจ๐ŸŒŽ Today, we come together to celebrate the unity and cooperation among the nations of the Americas on this special day, April 14th. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ’™

A bit of history: Pan American Day was first observed in April 14th, 1930 (US acknowledged and declared in 1931), following the establishment of the Pan American Union in 1910. Its aim is to promote understanding, solidarity, and collaboration among all countries in the Americas. ๐Ÿ“š๐ŸŒ

On this day, we want to give a heartfelt shoutout to the hardworking coffee farmers in South America. โ˜•๐ŸŒฑ Their dedication and passion bring us the rich, aromatic flavors we enjoy every morning, fueling our days and creating connections across the continent. ๐ŸŒ„๐ŸŒฟ

๐Ÿ”ฌ The importance of consuming ground coffee soon after grinding lies in the degradation of its aroma compounds and flavor profile. Oxidation and other chemical reactions occur when coffee grounds are exposed to air.

๐ŸŒŽโ˜•๏ธIf you've ever taken a sip of a coffee or wine that transports you to the heart of a lush forest or a rich, loamy vineyard, you've likely experienced an earthy flavor profile. ๐Ÿท๐ŸŒฑ

Earthy flavors are often described as natural, raw, and reminiscent of the very soil where the coffee originated. They can evoke notes of damp soil, mushroom, and wet leaves โ€“ grounding your palate and connecting you to the earth itself. ๐ŸคŽ

The Brooklyn Blend, our signature single blend from certified organic Sumatra coffee, is loved by many of our customers for its earthy profile. ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฉ Sumatra coffee, hailing from the Indonesian island of Sumatra, is particularly renowned for its earthy characteristics. The unique processing method called "wet-hulling" or "giling basah" contributes to the earthiness in Sumatra coffee. ๐Ÿ๏ธ

The beans are only partially dried before the outer layers are removed, allowing the beans to absorb more moisture from the environment. This results in a distinct flavor profile that's bold, low-acidity, and teeming with earthy notes. ๐ŸŒณโ˜•๏ธ

Winter's coming to an end!!

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ”ญ Tomorrow (3/20) marks the astronomical transition from winter to spring, as the Earth's tilt and orbit bring about the vernal equinox. This event occurs when the sun crosses the celestial equator, resulting in nearly equal lengths of day and night across the globe. ๐Ÿ‘

We're looking forward to some warmth here in NYC! โ˜€๏ธ

[COFFEE SCIENCE] ๐Ÿ”ฌโ˜•๏ธ

Did you know that your daily cup of coffee โ˜•๏ธ not only keeps you awake, but could also have multiple health benefits? An interesting review article published in the journal "Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry" (2020) investigates coffee's complex chemistry and how it impacts our bodies by analyzing dozens of published, peer-reviewed studies.

The research finds that coffee's bioactive compounds such as caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and antioxidants, may be associated with a probable decreased risk of certain cancers; cardiovascular disease and mortality; Parkinson's disease; and type-2 diabetes. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ.

But remember, moderation is key. ๐Ÿค“ Too much coffee may lead to side effects like anxiety or sleep disturbances.

Hard to believe that it's already the middle of March 2023!

Hope you all have a wonderful Spring with a cup of coffee. โ˜•

Fun fact of the day:
According to historical records, coffee was first used as food ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
The Oromo people of Ethiopia used to mix ground coffee beans with animal fat to create small energy balls that were eaten during long journeys or during times of food scarcity. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

It wasn't until centuries later that people began to brew coffee and drink it as we do today! ๐Ÿ‘

What temperature makes the best hot coffee? โ˜•๏ธ๐Ÿค”

According to the National Coffee Association, the ideal temperature range for brewing hot coffee is between 195ยฐF and 205ยฐF (90ยฐC to 96ยฐC). This helps extract the optimal flavor and aroma from the coffee beans without over-extracting or burning them. ๐Ÿ˜‡

When it comes to serving hot coffee, the ideal temperature range is generally between 155ยฐF and 175ยฐF (68ยฐC to 79ยฐC). This range is hot enough to enjoy the coffee without scalding your mouth, but not so hot that it will burn your tongue or affect the flavor of the coffee. ๐Ÿ˜˜

Of course, individual preferences may vary, but these temperature ranges are generally considered optimal by coffee experts. How do you like your coffee? Let us know in the comments! โ˜•๏ธ๐Ÿ’ฌ

[COFFEE SCIENCE]
Don't overlook the importance of grinding your coffee beans! This crucial step can have a big impact on the flavor and aroma of your coffee. โ˜•๏ธ๐Ÿ’–

When coffee is brewed, hot water extracts soluble compounds such as caffeine, acids, and oils from the coffee particles. The rate at which these compounds are extracted depends on the size of the coffee particles. Finely ground coffee has a larger surface area than coarse coffee, which means that more coffee particles are exposed to water, resulting in a faster and more complete extraction. โ˜•๏ธ๐Ÿ™Œ

The practice of grinding coffee dates back to at least the 14th century, although it may have been used even earlier than that. In the early days, coffee beans were ground by hand using tools like mortar and pestle, which was a time-consuming and labor-intensive process ๐Ÿ˜…

Freshly ground coffee tastes better because the grinding process releases the aromatic compounds and oils that give coffee its flavor and aroma. When coffee beans are roasted, these compounds are trapped inside the bean and are released only when the bean is ground. ๐ŸคŽ

As soon as coffee beans are ground, they begin to lose these aromatic compounds and oils through a process called oxidation. This means that the longer ground coffee sits, the more its flavor and aroma will deteriorate. That's why we often recommend grinding your coffee just before brewing, to ensure that you get the freshest, most flavorful cup possible. ๐Ÿ‘

At Brooklyn Lab Coffee, we always freshly grind whole beans (and roast them daily) once we receive your order for a bag of ground coffee!

ยกHola! Are you in the mood for something rich and flavorful?
Look no further than the coffee beans from the Chiapas region of Mexico! ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ๐ŸŒฟ

Not many people realize that Mexico is also home to some fine coffee beans.

Nestled on the Guatemalan border, Chiapas is the state's best coffee growing area. ๐Ÿ‘ This region also holds the crown for producing the most coffee in Mexico, at 40% of the country's total yield! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

The flavor profile includes notes of chocolate, bitters, nuts, citrus, and lemon, along with a round body and lasting finish๐ŸคŽ

We recommend brewing the beans with either French press or Pour over.

Try a cup of coffee with Chiapas beans and savor the taste of Mexico! ๐ŸŒ…๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿผ
