If you're exhausted from fighting your kids over vegetables, bone broth, and sourdough while they beg for the stuff their friends are eating — I get it. You're not trying to be controlling. You just want them to be healthy. But when every meal feels like a battle, it's easy to feel like the bad guy.
Here's the truth: you don't have to force it. You just have to make real food normal.
Here are 4 ways that actually work:
1. Stop making it a big deal.
When you present real food like it's medicine or a punishment, kids resist harder. But when bone broth is just soup, fermented vegetables are just a side dish, and sourdough is the normal bread — kids stop treating it like the enemy. Serve it like it's no big deal, because in your house, it isn't. Real food is just what you eat.
2. Let them see YOU eating it and enjoying it.
Your kids are watching you all the time. If they see you eating sourdough with butter, sipping bone broth, snacking on fermented pickles, and actually enjoying it — that registers deeper than any lecture ever will. You don't have to explain why it's good for them. Just let them see that the people they trust most actually want to eat this food.
3. Involve them in the process.
Let your kids help you order from the farm. Unpack the delivery box. Wash the vegetables. Crack the eggs. Stir the soup. When they participate in choosing, receiving, and preparing real food, they feel ownership over it. It stops being "mom's weird health thing" and starts being "our food." And when it's theirs, they're way more likely to actually eat it.
We've seen this over and over with our farm families — kids who help unpack the box, who've been to the farm and met the animals, who've picked vegetables from the garden — they eat differently. Because they're connected to it.
4. Keep it in the house and make it easy.
Here's the thing: the real battle isn't at the dinner table. It's what you keep stocked in your fridge and pantry.
If what's available is sourdough, raw milk, pasture-raised eggs, cheese, leftover roast chicken, and cut-up vegetables ready to grab — that's what they'll eat when they're hungry. You're not the food police when real food is simply the default. You've just made the easy choice the right one.
When there's no junk to choose from, there's no fight. And when real food is what's always ready and available, your kids learn to reach for it without you having to say a word.
You're not a bad mom for caring about what your kids eat. You're doing the hard work of setting them up for a lifetime of health — and that matters.
Real food doesn't have to be a fight. It just has to be normal.
