Dear Valued Customers,

As many of you know, I have been a proud member of the restaurant community for over 40 years, and I am reaching out to you today with an important request regarding a pivotal issue affecting our industry.

On the upcoming ballot, there is a measure labeled Question 5. I urge you to vote NO on this initiative. If Question 5 passes, it could have devastating consequences for our restaurant and many others across Massachusetts. This measure proposes to increase the minimum hourly wage for tipped employees to match the state minimum wage over the next four years. While the intention may be good, the reality is that it will severely impact our ability to provide quality service and maintain the vibrant dining experience you have come to love.

Many of our servers work here part-time, often juggling other full-time jobs to support themselves and their families, particularly single parents who rely on tips to make ends meet. If this measure passes, it would force these dedicated individuals to leave the industry, as their earnings would diminish significantly. The result? A drastic decline in the quality of service you receive, as well as the potential closure of our beloved local restaurants.

Moreover, a YES vote would inevitably lead to higher menu prices. Your favorite $13 cheeseburger could jump to $20, and a $25 entrée could soar to $35 or even $40. This is not just a threat to our business, but a threat to the entire dining experience in our community.

This initiative has been pushed by a national activist group that does not understand or care about the unique challenges faced by Massachusetts small businesses and their employees. We need your support to ensure that our local restaurants continue to thrive.

I genuinely love my role here at Cafe Porto Bello and I hope to continue serving you for many more years to come. Please make your voice heard — vote NO on Question 5!

Cafe Porto Bello willl be closed Friday July 1st through Tuesday July 5th. We will reopen at our normal business hours on Wednesday, July 6th. All of us at Cafe Portobello wish you and your families a very happy and safe Fourth of July!!
