Staff Highlight: The Girls of Summer

Every summer, they arrive.

Not with fanfare.

Just a couple of suitcases and impossible optomism. After a 30-hour journey to get here, they have a work ethic that makes the rest of us wonder if we're moving in slow motion.

The Girls of Summer.

Two J-1 students from Kosovo who wandered into Footbridge last year looking for a second job.

This year, they came straight to us.

Drita

Drita has already graduated from medical school.

In a few years she'll be training as a surgeon, steady hands holding a scalpel instead of a serving tray.

Until then, she's just as comfortable serving a packed dining room as she is rolling pretzels or tackling prep in the kitchen. Drita is good at all of it. Making everyone around her smile? She is good at that too.

She also happens to be a pool shark.

Don't let the smile fool you.

She'll beat you.

Then she'll probably celebrate by giving you a hug.

Her favorite Footbridge Food? Blueberry Crumble! And a sweet mocktail with coconut, orange juice, pineapple and a splash of soda water.

Dea

Ask Dea what she's studying and she'll tell you English language and literature.

Truth is, we don't know a whole lot about Dea because she's too busy working.

She somehow juggles three jobs without ever looking rushed, carries three trays like gravity is optional, and attacks every shift with the same quiet determination.

She handles food prep, is comfortable as host or server, runs food, busses tables and washes dishes. And she backs up everyone else no matter what her primary job is. Most of all, she smiles at everyone, laughs with everyone.

What Dea recommends at Footbridge? The Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Salt Taters, with extra Salt Taters and a Shirley Temple.

Together, our staff from Kosovo have become part of the family.

They'll head home to Kosovo soon, finish another semester, and move one step closer to the lives they're building.

And if we're lucky...

Next summer, they'll come home to us again...
..and make our little corner of the world a little brighter.
