“The shield is the silent protector in battle, yet also the fiery pan in the camp, giving you strength with every meal.

When you march to war, the shield is your unbreakable armor; when you return, the shield is your comfort, your meal, the energy that keeps you going and gives you strength to continue the fight.

The shield will never lose its strength and will never leave your side — whether in life-and-death moments or times of rest. The higher the heat, the stronger the shield becomes—never to be pierced.

As long as there is breath in your body, remember these words, and you will reach the glory of victory.”

THREE FIREFIGHTERS AND A "APPRECIATE" MEAL

Hello folks👋,
Today, I happened to come across a news story on Facebook about wildfires here in Idaho.
There was one particular photo in the story that made me stop and stare for quite a while.
In the background, flames were rising high into the sky, with thick smoke covering the horizon.
And in the foreground, there were three firefighters walking together.
I looked at that picture…
And suddenly, I thought about the three firefighters who came into my restaurant yesterday.
I don't know why, but their build, the way they walked, and even the way they looked in their firefighting gear…
They looked incredibly similar to the three men in that photograph.
And that moment brought yesterday's story right back to me.
At first, I didn't think this was a story I necessarily needed to share.
But seeing those three firefighters in that picture made me want to tell it.
Here's what happened.
Yesterday, three firefighters from Oregon stopped by my restaurant for a meal.
When they walked in, they looked pretty…
BEAT UP.
Their faces were dirty.
Their clothes were covered in dust and dirt.
Their hands and arms were grimy.
But there was something about these three guys—their attitude, their smiles, the way they carried themselves—that immediately made me like them.
Honestly…
I felt for them.
Because I knew where they had just come from.
They had just come out of the forests where wildfires were burning.
They had been standing in smoke, surrounded by flames and incredible heat, doing their job.
To them, it may simply be a duty.
But to ordinary people like us…
It is a job that deserves tremendous respect.
I spent some time talking with them, and the first thing I wanted to say was:
“Thanks for your service.”
Thank you for what you do.
Thank you for what you are doing for our communities.
Because this is not an easy job.
A wildfire is nothing like an ordinary fire.
It is massive.
It is extremely hot.
It is unpredictable and difficult to control.
And the people standing in front of those flames sometimes have to put their own lives at risk.
I asked them:
“When you're out there doing your job, what is the most difficult and dangerous part?”
One of them told me about all the equipment they have to carry.
The special protective clothing.
The yellow jackets.
The helmets.
The gear designed to protect their bodies from the extreme heat.
But there was one thing he said they could NEVER afford to be without.
WATER.
Think about that for a moment.
During the summer, we can have days here when temperatures reach 100°F or even higher.
And these men are working in areas where everything around them is burning.
The heat from the flames is hitting their bodies.
Smoke.
Dust.
Sweat.
Dehydration.
And despite all of that…
They keep going.
Listening to them talk made me feel even more grateful.
And honestly…
Men! These guys were eating like they hadn't seen food in a week! 😂
One of them looked at my cowboy hat and said:
“I love your cowboy hat with the American flag pins.”
I said:
“Thanks, man! I'm pro-USA. Look around my place—you'll see American flags everywhere!”
We laughed and gave each other that good old American-style fist bump.
Then another guy looked at my watch and asked:
“What kind of watch are you wearing? It looks fancy, bro!”
I laughed.
“Right? It's an Invicta. Cheap, man! Only $150 bucks at Costco!”
We laughed again.
It was just a simple conversation.
Three guys.
A meal.
Some jokes.
Nothing extraordinary.
Until it was time to pay.
I looked at the bill and said:
“Today, let me take care of this.”
“Please, let me buy you guys this meal.”
Not because I thought I was doing something great.
And certainly not because I wanted to tell everyone:
“Cowboy Chef gave firefighters a free meal.”
No.
Not at all.
I simply thought about it this way:
They had done something big for the community.
And I could do something small for them.
Just a meal.
Just a simple way of saying:
“I APPRECIATE YOU GUYS.”
And honestly, this kind of thing happens quite often around here.
There are many customers who pay for meals for firefighters, veterans, police officers, or other people they simply want to thank.
The three firefighters thanked me several times.
And before they left, one of them asked:
“What's your name?”
I told him:
“People here call me Cowboy Chef. You can just call me Cowboy Chef.”
He smiled and said:
“Next time, we'll bring more friends, family, and people we know to your restaurant.”
That made me smile.
Because I think that's what gratitude is supposed to look like.
It gets passed from one person to another.
They do something good for the community.
I do something small for them.
And then that kindness keeps moving forward.

But let me make one thing very clear.
I'm not telling this story to promote myself.
I'm not telling it so people will think:
“Wow, Duy Mongo is such a good guy. He gave firefighters a free meal.”
No.
No.
NO.
What I really want to talk about is something much simpler.
I believe that no matter where we live, and no matter what we do for a living…
Sometimes, all we need is a little EMPATHY.
A little CARE.
And a little GRATITUDE.
Because there are so many people around us quietly doing incredibly important things for our communities.
People whose names we don't know.
People we've never met.
People we may never see again for the rest of our lives.
But they are still out there doing things that make our lives safer and better.
Those three firefighters may walk into places where most of us would never dare to go.
They face the flames to protect forests.
To protect homes.
To protect property.
And sometimes…
To protect the lives of people they've never even met.
And what did I do?
I bought them a meal.
That's it.
It's tiny compared with what they do.
But I believe the value of kindness isn't measured by how much you give.
It's measured by the heart behind what you give.
And this isn't only about firefighters.
Sometimes someone who is struggling walks into my restaurant.
If I hear their story, and I know they genuinely need help, then within my ability, I'll try to help.
Maybe it's a meal.
Maybe it's a small discount.
Maybe it's simply asking:
“Are you okay?”
You don't have to be rich to help someone.
You don't have to do something huge.
A small act, when it comes from a sincere heart, can still carry tremendous meaning.
And I think that's one of the beautiful things about owning a business.
Business isn't only about how many meals you sell.
How much money you make.
Or how many customers walk through your doors.
It's also about asking:
What good have I brought into the lives of the people who crossed my path?
Someone walks into my restaurant hungry.
I give them a meal.
Someone is struggling.
I help them a little.
Someone has spent an entire day protecting our community.
I look them in the eyes and say:
“Thank you.”
Sometimes…
That's all it takes.
And who knows?
For someone who is exhausted, dirty, hungry, and coming from a dangerous place…
That small gesture might make them feel:
“Someone actually sees what we're doing.”
And I believe that when we give something good to others, we receive something precious in return.
Not necessarily money.
Not necessarily something we can hold in our hands.
But joy.
Peace.
And that beautiful feeling of knowing:
“Today, I did something good for another human being.”
I also believe in something we call BLESSINGS.
The good we do today may not come back immediately.
It may not come back as money.
It may not come back in the same form we gave it.
But someday…
It may come back in a completely different way.
Because life is strange like that.
You are kind to one person.
That person may become kind to someone else.
That person may pass it on to another.
And another.
And another.
And before you know it…
One small act of kindness may have created a circle of goodness that traveled much farther than you ever imagined.
So if you have an opportunity to help someone today, don't tell yourself:
“It's such a small thing. Does it even matter?”
Yes.
It matters.
A meal may not change someone's life.
A few words of encouragement may not solve their problems.
A little financial help may not seem like much.
But it may make one very difficult day…
just a little easier.
And sometimes…
That's enough.
Sometimes, that's all it takes.
So, thank you to those three firefighters who walked into my restaurant yesterday.
Not simply because they came to eat.
But because meeting them reminded me of something very simple:
We don't have to do something extraordinary to make a difference in this world.
We just need to care.
We need to have empathy.
We need to show gratitude.
And whenever we can…
Reach out and help someone.
Even just a little.
Because who knows…
That little act of kindness you give someone today…
may be exactly what makes them believe:
There is still a lot of goodness in this world.
And if every one of us is willing to do just a little…
I truly believe…
This world can become a better place.
