On June 21, 1916, the Florida Internal Improvement Fund (IIF), accepted the bid of Margaret Burlingame for what became Burlingame Island. Mary Brickell filed a law suit in July of 1916 to block the sale of the land mass which ultimately was confirmed by the supreme court of Florida. The island is now known as Brickell Key on Claughton Island today. Photo is an aerial view of the spoil isle in 1916.
