This past weekend, we had the privilege of visiting the beautiful city of Ottawa, Illinois. On August 21st, 1885, the first of the famous debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas were held in the town square. Here, ten thousand heard the two candidates debate for a seat in the United States Senate. The arguments centered around Lincoln's resolve to defend one constitutional phrase, "all men are created equal." The rest, as they say, is history.
