Convinced that the USMNT was suffering from a shortage of “veteran leadership,” Trivia Mike announced he would join the team despite being several decades older than most of the players and having never completed a full jog. Arriving at training camp wearing shin guards over blue jeans and carrying a cooler full of PBR, Mike immediately began giving motivational speeches. Unfortunately, his understanding of futbol was limited. He repeatedly picked up the ball and ran with it, called corner kicks “foul balls,” and spent twenty minutes arguing with referees about why ties should be settled with a trivia contest instead of penalty kicks.

Things got worse when Mike became obsessed with flopping after hearing it was a common soccer strategy. During a practice match, he dramatically threw himself to the ground after a light breeze crossed the field. Believing he had suffered a career-ending injury, he demanded a shot of Fireball, a stretcher, an ambulance, and a ceremonial retirement ceremony. Seconds later, a seagull landed nearby and stole his Hemplers hot dog, causing Mike to leap to his feet and chase it across the field at full speed. The crowd erupted in cheers, believing they had witnessed a miraculous recovery. To this day, Mike claims he would have led Team USA to a championship had coaches been willing to replace conditioning drills with trivia questions and discounted domestic beer.
