【Homeless Participate Too!】

"Is there anything we can help you with?" asked the homeless person.
"Can you help cut vegetables and prepare tonight's home-cooked meal for the homeless?"
"Actually, I love cooking! I can help!"

In December, we officially launched our Community Care Hub project to serve the needs of local homeless people, providing a rest area, three free meals a night, and hot showers. Despite our experience serving in Hong Kong, we were still nervous about our "first" official local homeless outreach. Over the past month, we've been working hard on outreach. Church members and I not only distributed flyers but also prepared hot drinks and free meals for the homeless, using outreach methods to build relationships with the homeless in Birmingham.

【生活真是不容易（Life is hard)】

「Life is hard（生活真是不容易）。」他然後哭起來。

「Yes, it's not easy for a lot of people.（是的，很多人也不易。）」我拍著他的肩膊說。

前兩天教會定期的社區探訪，我們在市中心遇到露宿的他。他說：

「我打算回到監倉去。」

「甚麼？」

「監倉甚麼都有，總好過在此。我正在掙扎，好不好去做犯法的事就可以回去。」

「能夠理解的……可不可以不要這樣嗎？」我望著那中年憔悴的樣子，靦腆地回應著。9月初，香港法庭才判了一位中年失業漢因失業及申請不到綜援傷人而坐監。

十日前才從監倉出來的他，拿出Bolton Council厚厚的信件給我們看，是關於申請Council house（公屋）的。「我看不懂這信，不懂字……是監裡的社工幫我申請的。」他說。「我知道附近有機構可以幫你，不過今天是星期天，現在帶你去，明天你自己去，可嗎？」

沒想到他願意起行，因很多無家者都放棄了自己。因著舊患，他帶著拐拐的步履，在雨中發抖地一起前往無家者機構Shelter會址。

「很多謝你。你沒怕過我是陌生人嗎？」他說。

「只是做能夠做的事。這是教會舊會址，但我仍記得這機構。若有會址，我會想你每天來教會吃飯。但很抱歉我們現在沒錢租了，某程度也是『無家』，只能作這樣的服侍呢。」

「生活真是不容易（Life is hard）。」他說畢後，悄悄地哭起來。

「是的，很多人也不易（Yes, it's not easy for a lot of people）。」我拍拍他的肩膊，以安慰掩蓋我那心酸。

撇下教會的「無家」，香港人多多少少也「無家」，特別是因政治而流亡或坐牢的，還有他們的家人。或多或少也能理解「無家」的而且確需要同行。

「主的靈……叫我傳福音給貧窮的人……被擄的得釋放，瞎眼的得看見，叫那受壓制的得自由。」（路4：18）耶穌的身體力行提示我們，要敏銳身邊的孤寡貧弱，並作出關心。特別是這佳節，因為日子真不容易過（Life is hard）。

【Life is Hard】

"Life is hard." He then began to cry.

"Yes, it's not easy for a lot of people." I said, patting him on the shoulder.

Two days ago, during the church's regular community outreach, we encountered him, a homeless man, in the city center. He said:

"I'm thinking of going back to prison."

"What?"

"In prison, you have everything. It's better than being out here. I'm struggling with whether or not to commit a crime so I can go back."

"I can understand... but can you avoid doing that?" I looked at his weary, middle-aged face and responded awkwardly. In early September, a Hong Kong court sentenced an unemployed man to prison for injuring someone after failing to secure social assistance.

He had just been released from prison ten days ago. He took out a thick letter from Bolton Council to show us; it was about applying for a council house. "I don't understand this letter. I can't read... A social worker in prison helped me apply for it," he said. "I know there are organizations nearby that can help you, but today is Sunday. I'll take you there now, and you can go on your own tomorrow, okay?"

"Thank you very much. Weren't you afraid of me as a stranger?" he asked.

"I'm just doing what I can. This used to be the church's old site, but I still remember this organization. If we still had a place, I'd want you to come to the church every day for meals. But I'm sorry, we can't afford the rent now. In a way, we are also 'homeless,' and can only serve in this limited way."

"Life is hard." He said this and quietly started to cry.

"Yes, it's not easy for a lot of people." I patted his shoulder, using comfort to mask my own heartache.

Leaving behind the church's "homelessness," many Hong Kong people are also "homeless" in one way or another, especially those who have gone into exile or been imprisoned for political reasons, and their families. To some extent, they can understand the need to walk alongside those who are truly "homeless."
