Well, apparently our Shake-A-Day video has violated community standards, Facebook is now restricting our page, and they’re threatening to take the video down. I’ve filed for a review, but genuinely curious as to what we did to upset the algorithm gods when I have seen way worse content on here.

I have a few theories, but I’d love to hear yours. Is it the gambling? Joe saying “Oh, sh*t”? The sheer, unregulated joy of a grown man winning money?

As you guys know, one of the things we love doing on this page is sharing the stories that happen behind the scenes in the bar and casino industry. The raw, tender, unexpected human moments that remind us there is so much more happening in people’s lives than what we see on the surface. We also do so much more than just pour drinks, cash tickets, and wipe down machines.

Because here’s the thing about this industry: it gets a pretty bad rap sometimes. And listen, I’m not going to sit here and pretend bars and casinos are magical little sanctuaries where everyone holds hands and sings Kumbaya. But I do think there’s a side of this industry that people don’t talk about nearly enough.

The human side.

So, in the spirit of keeping up with our page’s apparently never-ending identity crisis, and our growing list of followers, I’m starting a little segment where I’ll share a story that reminds us of the amazing moments woven into this industry. Stories like our Shake-A-Day video, the dollar bill story I shared a few months back, or the purse story I shared last week.

So, naturally, I racked my brain trying to come up with a name for this little side project. Something that captured the heart of what I wanted to do and spoke to the humanity, the connection, and all those little moments that can so easily go unnoticed when we’re busy rushing through our own lives.

And then it hit me: Humantending.

Now, you guys, I realize this isn’t technically a word. But I’ve said some other outlandish sh*t on this page and we seem to be doing just fine. 😅

We tend bars, we tend to business, and tend to the things that need our attention. But we also tend to humans. Everybody who walks through our doors has a story. Everybody is carrying something and sometimes truly beautiful experiences are woven into our shifts.

So, every few weeks, we’ll be sharing a Humantending story here. And if you have a story you think belongs here, I want to hear it. Seriously. Message me. Pretty please? I’ll leave a few examples of what kind of stories I’m looking for in the comment section.

So, our little Shake-A-Day video we posted a few days ago? Well, it went viral, and apparently a handful of you watched it and thought, “You know what this wholesome little moment needs? A call to immigration.”

I wish I were making that up.

Imagine watching a video of people having a good time, celebrating a winner, and enjoying a little human connection, and deciding that your afternoon would be better spent trying to get somebody in trouble with the federal government based on zero evidence. I don’t know what kind of hobbies we’re working with here, but I might suggest a walk. A crossword puzzle. Maybe a houseplant?

Respectively, go touch grass.

Anyway, nothing came of it, BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL HERE LEGALLY. If you must know, they’re all from TEXAS.

And when I tell you these men are wonderful human beings, I mean it. They show up, they work hard, they treat people well, and they’re part of the fabric of this little community we love.

We own a bar and casino, you guys. We see a whole lot of different people walk through our doors, and you know what? We’re far more interested in the content of someone’s character than whatever assumptions somebody might make about them based on how they look or what language they speak.

And to the men in that video: we’re glad you come in. And you’ll always have a place at our bar.

You guys. Matty Rangel himself stopped by the comments on our Shake-A-Day video, which was definitely not on our bingo card for the week.

For those of you in this industry who don’t follow him, please go do that immediately. Like right now. Don’t even finish reading this post. His content is fantastic and the man is a literal legend in the bartending world. He captures the hilarity, the absurdity, and the very specific brand of human behavior that anyone who’s worked in this business will recognize immediately.

If you need us, we’ll be over in the corner, rocking back and forth, trying not to let this go to our heads. No promises.

Some of you may have caught this video in the comment section of another post, but I wanted to give it a proper home on our page because this is the type of stuff that makes my heart swell. It’s wholesome as hell, and the story behind it makes it even better.

This young man won our $1,411 Shake-A-Day pot, and he’s part of a group that just started coming in a few months ago. Greg, in the orange shirt, who we’ll affectionately refer to as their ringleader, has quickly become one of our employee favorites. They’re all genuinely good people, and we’re pretty damn fond of having them around.

But here’s where this story gets good. The young man who won had never played Shake-A-Day in his life. He’d legitimately never even heard of it. His friends had to explain the game to him and teach him how to play. Then this absolute rookie proceeds to roll five twos and take home pot 1 which was at over $1,400!!!!

I found out afterward this young man had a pretty horrendous week, which made watching this unfold even sweeter. And I’m not gonna lie, after hearing his story, I teared up the first time I watched it. We don’t know what people are carrying when they walk through our doors, and sometimes a little unexpected good fortune lands at exactly the right time.

I know it’s just a game of Shake-A-Day, but watching him pray before rolling, seeing his genuine interest in learning how to play, watching his reaction when he won, knowing he was brand-new to it, and witnessing his friends there celebrating with him made this moment feel like so much more than winning a pot.

Legitimately too wholesome not to share with you all. I can’t help but smile ear-to-ear every time I watch it.

And I love that Joe is trying to tell him to roll gently. 🎲❤️🙏🏽

Yesterday while Julia was working, it was brought to my attention that our urinal was clogged and started overflowing. Because of course it did. Nothing says living the dream as a small business owner quite like a plumbing emergency during a busy Sunday afternoon when the bar is full and nearly every casino chair is occupied.

I hadn’t even had time to make a phone call before one of our regulars, Josh, was in there with a plunger, rubber gloves, and a mop: cleaning up the overflow, taping off sensors, and taking care of business. (Janitorial business, to be clear. Let’s not make this weird, you guys.) My first instinct was to remind him that unclogging a public urinal wasn’t technically included in the perks of being a platinum plus member at High Tide.

He didn’t care. And he definitely didn’t listen.

Honestly, I’d love to tell you I was shocked by this display of human kindness from one of our regulars. That I stood there with my hand over my heart, gazing into the distance as a single tear rolled down my cheek and an angelic choir sang Hallelujah in the background.

But I wasn’t shocked. Not even a little.

Grateful? Absolutely. A moment where I felt how truly blessed I am? One hundred percent. But surprised? Not at all. Because, as I’m sure many small bars can attest, this is just what our regulars do. They show up in ways that have absolutely nothing to do with gambling, drinking, or whether they’ve had any luck on the machines lately.

Like most of our regulars, Josh and his wife Ashely would do about anything for us. They've probably unloaded more of my Sam's Club and Costco runs than I have. Heck, they’ve made those runs for me. They notice when something's off, pitch in without making a big deal about it, and roll up their sleeves without a second thought.

It is wild to me sometimes that we have managed to cultivate a clientele who will happily help unload industrial quantities of paper towels from my vehicle and grab a plunger when the job demands it. You can’t buy that type of loyalty, can’t manufacture it with a marketing campaign, and you sure as hell can’t fake it. Super grateful over here.

The urinal is temporarily retired, so I wrote our guys a little poem since “Out of Order" just didn't capture the emotion of the moment. And to whoever looked at our urinal and thought "spittoon"... congratulations, you turned a perfectly good Sunday afternoon into a full-blown plumbing emergency. But rest assured, we will find you. Never underestimate the investigative capabilities of a small-town bar.😉

My apologies for flooding your feed the last few days but after years of saying "we should really start a TikTok" and being told we should really start a TikTok, we are in fact, starting a TikTok!

We're told this is what the cool kids are doing. Keep in mind we are not the cool kids. We are a bar full of people who still say "The Facebook.”

Is it going to be good? Unclear.

Do we know what we're doing? Absolutely not.

The average age of our staff trying to figure it out: 47.6.

We have 17 followers so I guess you could say things are getting pretty serious.

Last night, while I was working with Mikey, a Facebook follower of ours made his way into High Tide around 10:00 pm for the very first time. This sweet guy has been following us on here for YEARS, but had never actually stepped foot inside the place. When he saw my post last night, even though he lives in the heights, apparently he decided it was finally time to pop his High Tide cherry.

And you guys, it genuinely made my night. His name is Jazer. (Such a cool name by the way.) He’s just a baby. Freshly 21. And he’s also a casino attendant, so he understands this industry on a soul level. We got to visit, and it was just one of those moments that reminded me why I wanted to be more intentional about meeting people. Our interaction was so meaningful that I asked him if I could share about it on Facebook. He happily obliged.

You can post on Facebook for years, crack jokes, share memes, share your heart, be vulnerable, promote your little business, and try your best to fight the Facebook algorithms and build an online community. But then someone walks through your door, someone who has been quietly following along for all that time, and suddenly that little corner of the internet becomes a real person standing right in front of you. It hits you in the feels and there really is something special about actually getting to meet the human beings on the other side of the screen. And deeply connect with them.

Jazen even took the time to leave us a sweet review, which means more than he probably realizes. We all know how much weight a negative review can carry, and how quickly people are willing to share a bad experience even if they were in the wrong. We have one-star reviews for things as silly as someone not winning after putting twenty bucks in a machine. Having someone take the time to share a genuinely kind one, especially someone who understands our industry firsthand, is something I appreciate.

My goal with this page has always been to keep it human instead of polished and professional. I want it to feel like you’re hanging out with us, not scrolling through some marketing department’s carefully curated content calendar. I don’t want High Tide to feel like a business that’s trying to convince you how great we are. And let’s be real, we’re not perfect. I want you to see the people and the heart behind it and decide for yourself. And in turn, I want random people I have never met, like Jazer, to swing in because over the course of those years they feel like they got to really know us.

So, Jazer, thank you for finally making your way in, for the conversation, for the kind words, and for reminding me that putting myself out there, even when it’s uncomfortable, is more than worth it. I’m really glad you came in. And I’m unofficially adopting you as my baby brother.

Mikey and I concocted a few reels last night, too. It was truly lovely getting to meet some of you and I made it until AFTER 11:00 p.m before my brain began submitting its formal resignation and my eyes started to cross.

Sundays have been a little slow since football started so consider this your friendly reminder that we’ve got the NFL Ticket.

I want to give a special shoutout to Casey for always getting the TVs going for me. Yes, I should learn, but anyone who has ever worked in a bar knows that is what regulars are for. 😉

It is not often you’ll find me down here at night, but I’ve been thinking lately about how intentional I want to get about getting to know some of the people who come in to support us during the evening hours. I work days, so there’s a whole population of High Tide regulars I know mostly by reputation, and frankly, that seems a little ridiculous on my part.

So tonight, I made the impulsive, last minute decision to stalk Mikey, follow him around for the night, and hopefully meet some of you fabulous humans in person. Mikey was all for it and we’ve actually had a lot of fun. We even had a little photo shoot. This pic in particular is meant to give off stalking/micromanagement vibes. I mean, I think we nailed it.

I’ve already met some wonderful people, so I’d say this little spontaneous adventure is off to a pretty darn good start. I’m not sure my day-shift DNA is equipped for a 2 a.m. closing time, but I’m going to give it the old college try. And if you see me start blinking in Morse code around midnight, just know I’m still happy to be here. And extremely grateful for your support of High Tide.
