A little history on our roses. Planted in 1945 by our grandparents, the roses were developed in France during the late 1930’s by Francis Meilland. Fearing for thier safety in 1939 of the most beautiful rose of his 800 seedlings the cuttings of rose #3-35-40 were sent to friends in Belgium, Italy and given to the US consul in Paris who brought them back to America. His masterpiece survived the war and named the Peace Rose on April 29, 1945 when Berlin fell to the Allies and bells of peace rang throughout Europe. The delegates to the first U.N. conference in San Francisco were given a Peace Rose bloom on May 8th 1945 as a symbol of hope and peace. Grandpa Anker who worked for the city got some of the cuttings which are the roses you see today. These very special and hearty roses have given hope and joy for 81 years and they smell good.
