Mise en Place Kitchen We serve coffee, but we're not your typical coffee shop. Mise en Place means "everything in its place".

It means preparing the kitchen and details beforehand, so that every plate is delivered picture-perfect, delicious, and on time. I live by these words in the work I do, from decorations, to sweets to savory dishes. I would love to bring this philosophy to your private dinner party, small, or medium event!

{ More friends we’ll miss ❤️ } This is Yumi and her beautiful baby daughter. We saw Yumi almost daily through her pregancy as she came to get pastries and cakes. We saw her belly grow and were so thrilled to follow the progress of the birth around New Year and then the growing cute baby girl visiting our cafe with mom and dad. We’d like to think she’s crying to hear about the cafe closing, but the reality is she cries whenever she sees Chef Theully😂.
Yumi and her husband were some of the most supportive guests at our cafe. Through all our adaptations we made during shelter in place times, like pre-ordered holiday meals, they were there to support us. Thank you so much! We’ll miss you and family, but we will keep in touch!

{ What you missed } Based on a traditional Brazilian sweet called “Romeo e Julieta” (Romeo and Juliet) which is made with guava paste and cheese or cream, Chef Theully made this amazing cake (actually two) for our last day on Sunday. A fluffy yogurt cake is the base with a guava cheesecake on top. One guest who has tried so many of our cakes said “this was the best cake I ever had in my life.”
Like the bittersweet love story that gives the name to this treat, it was a fitting way to end our bittersweet last day.

{ Thank You Fil! } This is Fil and his friend Gerry. Without fail Fil stopped by our cafe e-v-e-r-y day for his decaf americano, pastries, and a meal too. On those occasional days we had to close for maintenance or holidays, we were sure to text Fil to save him a trip. Likewise he let us know on the rare occasion he was out of town so we wouldn’t worry about him. Fil represents the one thing that made it so worth it to come to work every day and operate our little cafe: the PEOPLE that loved what we were offering, tried our new specials, or came for the newest cake of the day. We walk away from Mise en Place Kitchen rich with the new friendships we formed over the last 14 months. Seeing Fil plus so many other not “regulars,” but new friends, brought a smile to our face even when the day was tough. Thanks to all of you! Also thank you to for showing up and brightening our day!❤️

{ Farewell } It was a bittersweet day as we said goodbye to so many wonderful people who have loved what we offered over the past fourteen months. Some things like shooting stars and butterflies show us there amazing beauty for a brief moment in our lives. While we weren’t a lasting fixture at our spot in downtown Berkeley, hopefully we had a similar impact on our community, offering some joy, friendship, beauty and deliciousness for a brief moment, especially during this pandemic. A huge Thank you to everyone who supported us when the world was shut down and when it was opened up. Love, Mise en Place Kitchen family. ❤️

{ Closing Soon } With a heavy heart, we’re letting you know that we’ll be closing Mise en Place Kitchen permanently.

While we have loved serving the Berkeley community over the last year+, making friends, and hopefully bringing joy to people during a pandemic, Chef Theully has decided to focus on her health, family, and other projects.

❤️A big thank you and obrigado to everyone who supported us since we opened, whether you visited once, every once in a while, or every day.❤️

October 3rd will be our last day open. So be sure to visit soon for your last tartine on Theully’s signature cheese waffle . (Note, we’ll be offering a limited menu from now until our last day.)
