I hate being left out of all the First Day of School antics that I'm joyfully reading on FB. So here is my update on our boy, who is now attending Diablo Valley College with, Yes, a Computer Science declared Major.

But as you can see here in his First Day of School teaching music in Benicia's elementary schools in their STEAM program for VOENA Choir.

He's still very involved with VOENA's music program and assisting its Director Annabelle Marie in anyway that is needed. Which means that Tony and I are also still very involved, so you'll continue to see updates about concerts, fundraisers, and Registration from us both.

VOENA's registration is now open and its first Class is September 10th. It's open to all who wish to come out and experience the magic of being a part of this tremendous organization. https://www.voena.org/where-are-we

Goto BeniciaScouts.org to find a unit for your child to grown in. Our Benicia Cub Scouts Pack 108 provides the fun and growth that every extra-circular activity should have. And the opportunity to join the exclusive, resume rich rank of Eagle Scout. No matter what your child's gender might be.

I didn't allow our son to drop out of Scouting during his teens when he lost sight of his earlier National Eagle Scout Association dream. Within a month of his Eagle Court of Honor he came up to me, gave me a hug and thanked me for getting rough with him, and insisting that he complete his journey.

Though he's still early in both his college and professional careers, he's reaffirmed that hug and thank you several times, as he's seen the respect, opportunities and prestige that he's given as an Eagle outside of the Scouting Community.

We were blessed/cursed with a child that wanted to try and do everything: 2 sports leagues, science programs, art, photography, and both band and VOENA Choir. Only band and to some extent sports provided the continuous community from Middle School to High School along with Scouting, which spanned all 3 levels of local education. And only VOENA provided comparable resume opportunities.

None of them helped to build the family bond that Scouting did for us. Scouting allows parents to be as involved as they want. There's nothing like watching the sun rise over the Sierras, racing a sail boat, attending High-Adventure summer camps, building and learning life skills together that cement those bonds to enhance the family team. Even if you coach your child's sport team (which we both did at one time or another), you're still on the side-line watching them. Scouting embraces your whole family for the whole adventure of their growth.

I just got back from voting, as has my beloved Tony. Please make sure that your vote counts today. And I'll put out one more plea for my local peeps to support our Schools, our Town and those battling Mental Illnesses. Quality of life costs dollars and better education for all of our youth costs some more. Investing in our future is one of the best investments you can make.

It's my grandfather's birthday today! WWII Bomber Navigator, shot down twice, once behind enemy lines, and survived to tell the tales. He came home to earn himself a Harvard MBA and then built and ran his own Real Estate Syndication firm on Wall Street. When the IRS came after the industry by suing him, he took on his own government in court. He won every case and appeal until he was broke and only then turned to the industry for help (which he got) and then the IRS crawled away. He left me with a fighting spirit, a trouble shooting mind and a couple pieces of advice: "There's no better investment than California Real Estate" and my personal favorite "If you're not pi***ng someone off, you're just not living to your potential or trying hard enough". Here's to you Grandpa! Your legacy lives on.

I supported it then, and I continue to support and work to improve the lives and futures of every child, particularly of the children here in Benicia! So I cleaned off my old "Yes On C" yard sign and I'm putting it out on my porch again. After food, health and shelter, there is NO better use of anyone's money, than providing education to our children in safe, secure, protected and current facilities. I understand that very few of us feel that we have enough income. But by continuing our commitment to our schools, we allow our future generations to live better lives and improve our own fortunes by increasing the value of our property at the same time. Ask any Real Estate Professional, the better our schools, the higher all property value is in that community. I'll end with: The better we raise & treat our children, the better they will be able to care for us when we're older and need their help.

Today was the 1st Day for Christmas Tree Pick-Up here in Benicia. My Eagle Scout and I still jump in and help out every year as the donations that are gathered through these and our efforts benefit every Scouting Unit in Benicia.

So the donation that you make to have your Christmas Tree picked up curbside sends children to camp, buys patches and awards to build excitement about learning and stays local. So make sure that you get signed up and have your tree whisked away by a burly Scout or Scouter. And they will do so happily knowing that every child in their unit will benefit.

If you haven't signed up already you can do so on the Scouting web site: https://www.flagmapper.com/Orgs/Register.php?OrgDir=beniciascouts&FormDefID=1004
