June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. A delayed freedom that arrived anyway. A reminder that liberation is never given on schedule, but it gets claimed.

Meet the man whose name is on every bottle of Uncle Nearest 🥃

Nathan "Nearest" Green was born enslaved in Tennessee. He was also a master distiller, the first known Black master distiller in America. The man who taught a young Jack Daniel how to make whiskey. The man who developed the charcoal-filtering technique that makes Tennessee whiskey Tennessee whiskey. Without him, the whole category doesn't exist.

After emancipation, Jack Daniel hired Nearest as his distillery's first master distiller. Seven generations of Green's family have worked there ever since. But for over 150 years, his name was left out of the story.

In 2017, Fawn Weaver founded Uncle Nearest to put it back. Today, the brand is the best-selling Black-owned spirit in history. Nearest's great-great-granddaughter, Victoria Eady Butler, serves as Master Blender, the first Black woman to hold that role in American whiskey.
