How it started vs. How it’s going. 💚

I remember cooking all that for my son’s 1st birthday years back!

It tasted good, and everyone said, ”You should start selling food!”

But here’s what I’ve learned: good food consists of 3 major things: Look, Smell, and Taste.

Good food doesn’t just taste good. It has to look appealing, smell incredible, and the taste should seal it completely. 🔥

Consistency is key!

From those early days in my kitchen to now catering graduations, weddings, and celebrations across DMV, we’ve come so far. But we won’t stop here.

We will continue working on our recipes and operations because you deserve more than mediocre food. You deserve excellence, authenticity, and flavors that remind you of home. 💚🇳🇬

This weekend, we had the honor of catering a medical school graduation celebration that touched our souls in ways we didn’t expect.

From the moment we heard “Worthy of My Praise” by Dunsin Oyekan and Lawrence Oyor playing as the graduant made her entrance, we knew this wasn’t just another party, this was a worship experience, a testimony , a moment of pure gratitude to God.

Graduating from medical school is no small feat. It takes years of sacrifice, sleepless nights, unwavering faith, and relentless determination. And to witness a family celebrate that victory by lifting their voices in praise? That’s what it’s all about. 🙏🏾✨

The special keyboard rendition by her dad was absolutely beautiful.
The Christian games? So wholesome and full of joy.
The food? Our guests made sure we knew it was well received. 💚🔥

We are so grateful to have been part of such a beautiful, faith-filled celebration. It reminded us why we do what we do, to serve, to bless, and to be part of life’s most meaningful moments.

Welcome to May, a month that holds a special place in my heart.

Today marks not just the beginning of my birthday month, but also 6 incredible years of Abeni’s Kitchen. Six years of growth, learning, and most importantly, serving YOU.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Thank you for trusting us with your celebrations, for welcoming our food into your homes, and for being part of this beautiful journey.

If you’ve been following along, you know this sound is TOO REAL. 😂🇳🇬

6 years into running Abeni’s Kitchen, and here’s what I’ve learned about entrepreneurship in the catering business:

1. Not everyone is your customer, and that’s okay. Learn to say NO sometimes. Protect your peace and your process.

2. You will make mistakes. Things will go wrong. Risk management is everything when they do. Learn, adjust, keep moving.

3. Customer service really matters. If you’re too overwhelmed to handle it yourself, find someone capable. Spending all day cooking only to come home and deal with feedback? That’s a recipe for burnout.

4. Your loyal customers are gold. The ones who keep coming back, who trust you with their biggest moments, they deserve your best. (And we promise, every new customer gets that same love too! 💚)

5. It’s okay to fire customers. Some people are just contrarian. You don’t have to work with everyone.

6. A lot of your support will come from strangers. Some customers become family. Some of the people who believed in you first weren’t even in your circle, and that’s beautiful.

7. Your time as a CEO is PRECIOUS. Spend it wisely. Delegate often. You can’t do it all and shouldn’t have to.

8. Sometimes you have to fight back. There are fraudulent people out there who will try to take advantage of small businesses. Stand your ground.

9. Rest is not optional. You’re more prone to kitchen accidents when you’re tired. Take care of yourself so you can take care of others.

10. It’s okay to pause and go back to the drawing board. I had to close for over a year to welcome my second baby and prioritize my health. Your business will survive the pause, but you have to survive too.

11. Celebrate the small wins. Every order fulfilled, every happy customer, every week you survive, it all counts. Don’t wait for the “big moment” to be proud of yourself.

This business has stretched me, humbled me, and grown me in ways I never imagined. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it. 💚
