Grants graciously accepted on behalf of our community this August:
• Cozy Coats for Kids— providing new winter coats for local children in need. Cozy Coats for Kids
• Dogwood Health Trust — $20,000 — supporting our Buladean Digital Access Initiative, including digital literacy programming, and the ability to hire a digital literacy program instructor to help community members build computer and technology skills. Dogwood Health Trust
We are incredibly grateful for both of these opportunities and for the organizations investing in Buladean.
We are also grateful for previous Dogwood Health Trust capability funding back in October, which helped us rebuild our "back rentable rooms", now office space, and create additional opportunities for the Community Center to generate its own income and strengthen long-term sustainability... something we neglected to mention sooner and want to be sure Dogwood receives proper recognition for.
➡️ An important note about grant funding: Grant dollars must be used for the specific purpose for which they were awarded. Even when a grant includes funding for a staff position, that does not mean it can be used for regular payroll or general operations.
For example, Dogwood funding can help pay a digital literacy instructor because that position is part of the approved project for a limited time. It cannot simply be redirected to unrelated expenses.
➡️ Keeping the lights on, insurance paid, the grounds maintained, the regular staff positions funded, and the everyday operations of the Community Center going is largely up to our community through donations, fundraisers, and the very limited grants that specifically allow operating expenses.
♥️ That is why community support remains so important, even when you see us celebrating grant awards.
We are thankful for every dollar entrusted to us and proud to put it to work for Buladean. Thank you to grant funders and community supporters... it takes a village.
If you have any questions about how grants work or how grant funding is used, please feel free to reach out. We believe in full transparency and are always happy to answer questions.
