Thanks for joining us, with and Camp Okihi!

We are excited for you to join us again for Supper Club in June! Comment SUPPER CLUB below to learn more about our exclusive monthly dinner offer offering.

Camp Okihi is one of Kern County’s most inspiring restoration stories. Okihi was once a scout camp along the Kern River, it was abandoned for years after closing in 2010. The property suffered from vandalism, illegal dumping, fires, and neglect.

In 2022, Katherine and Stephen Winters stepped in through their foundation, White Wolf Wellness with a vision to restore the land and create a place for healing, education, and community connection.

Using horses, sheep, goats, and chickens, they have worked with nature to restore the ecosystem, improve soil health, and transform the property into a thriving community space.

Today, 🥳🎉💪Camp Okihi is a 14 acre riverside retreat offering sound baths, wellness programs, camp memberships, volunteer opportunities, youth education, camping experiences, and meaningful connection to nature.

At our June Supper Club, Katherine + Stephen will share more about the Camp Okihi journey, the challenges and victories of restoration, and the vision for its future. We can’t wait for you to hear more about their story.

Big thanks for featuring our offerings and providing us with a space to share positivity and community greatness.

Glad we got to showcase and as well!

Swipe for some old photos of my Grandpa Servideo + Grandpa Laganelli.

Angelo Servideo + Lawrence Laganelli đź–¤

Angelo served in the Army in Europe during World War II and received the Purple Heart 💜. Lawrence served in the U.S. Navy ⚓️ during World War II.

Looking at these photos, I cannot help but think about how young they were. Before they were grandfathers, I wonder what must have been going through their minds. My mom’s dad was a really good basketball player, and when he left, that life came to a halt. My dad’s dad was a business owner/entrepreneur, he had three businesses in his live; a luncheonette, a beauty salon and he was a commercial property owner/landlord. I do not recall many war stories from my childhood. It must have been so challenging.

As an adult, I think more about the stories that stayed untold, the sacrifices carried quietly, and the moments people gave so others could have ordinary things we sometimes take for granted.

My grandfather Lawrence passed away on August 10, 2016, just about a year after I opened Locale. He was 91 years old.

Today feels like a good reminder that gathering around a table is never a small thing. If your grandparents are still with you, hold them close. I am grateful to have had a relationship with my grandparents, and grateful that both of my grandfathers lived pretty long lives.

Remembering the pieces of our past that helped pave the way for the freedoms of today.

Who is someone you are remembering today?

When I go on the news, give a speech, or speak publicly in large and small settings, people often tell me, “I could never do that,” or “I don’t have what it takes.”

I disagree.

I’m no different than anyone else.

I get nervous. I feel stress on the inside. I SHOW UP ANYWAYS.

Because every time I choose not to show up, I usually wish I had.

Johnny Carson talked trash about Bakersfield for decades in front of millions of people, and from what I understand, it stemmed from an early performance here when he was still very green at the beginning of his career and felt he did not do well enough.

The interesting part is that Bakersfield embraced him.

People here thought he did a great job. Newspapers wrote positively about his performance. We showed up for him.

That never sat right with me, how indignant.

Bakersfield and Kern County are filled with incredible people, creativity, grit, agriculture, nature, culture, and stories that deserve to be told.

I don’t show up because I have some special gene or gift.

I show up because our community deserves people willing to show up for it.

There is beauty here that has always existed.

I’m just refusing to let the world keep missing it.

Thanks for providing me with a space to share amazing people + businesses that contribute to greatness in our community.

This month’s Maker Exchange was so much fun! We had a ton of great makers share their wares + crafts. The intention behind The Makers Exchanges is to connect our community with artists, artisans, crafters, small batch bakers and people that are passionate about unique offerings in effort to strengthen the maker’s space in Bakersfield. We’re grateful that we have the ability to open our doors for dinner on Thursdays and Fridays now and we look forward to hearing more creative fun community centric events with you in the near future.

Like and follow for more and comment MAKER if you’d like to learn more about our makers exchange and the next date we have scheduled for June.

We didn’t get everyone in this shot however the turnout for the night was amazing!
