There’s one thank you I haven’t done yet, and this one goes to Brad Downing… my husband. ❤️

Brad is, without question, the Coffeehouse’s best unpaid employee.

He picked up prizes in Dickinson. He told anyone who would listen about the Back to School Bash. He was up and working beside me by 7:00 the morning of the event, and whatever I asked of him… with the notable exception of taking a picture, which he did do once I got sad…he did with a willing heart.

But what I’m most thankful for is everything people didn’t necessarily see.

He didn’t choose the Coffeehouse. He didn’t choose the long hours, the crazy ideas, the piles of supplies, the late nights, or a Back to School Bash that slowly took over our lives for a while.

He chose me.

And because he did, he gave so much of himself to support something that mattered deeply to me and, ultimately, to our community.

There are a lot of things that happen at the Coffeehouse because people generously give their time, talents, and resources. But there are also a lot of things that happen because Brad quietly says, “What do you need?” and then helps me figure out how to make it happen.

Thank you, Brad, for being behind me through all of it… and for being the very best unpaid employee the Coffeehouse never actually hired. ❤️

There are some families who don’t just show up, they jump in wherever they’re needed. ❤️

Makayla brought in the whole King crew for the Back to School Bash: her parents, Eldon and Monica, and her siblings Emily, Michael, and Ethan.

And they were everywhere.

Eldon was in the kitchen cooking burgers alongside his kids, and when something needed hauled, he was the one moving trailers and getting things where they needed to go. Monica spent her time at the school supply station, helping families get everything they needed for the year ahead. Meanwhile, Makayla (after her shift at the shop), Emily, Michael, and Ethan were everywhere; working in the kitchen, picking up trash, and jumping in wherever another set of hands was needed.

That kind of willingness to serve says a lot about a family.

The King family was recently named Citizen of the Year, and after watching them work together to make this event happen, it’s pretty easy to understand why.

They don’t help because someone is watching. They don’t wait to be asked twice. They simply see something that needs done and step in.

We are incredibly grateful that they chose to give their time, energy, and hearts to our Back to School Bash.

Thank you, King family. Our community is better because you’re part of it. ❤️

And then there was the Prize Patrol. 😂🎉

Stacey Teters, Linda Rost, and Amanda Tunby got the very fun job of tracking down our prize winners and making a whole lot of kids VERY happy with a little extra treat thrown in for good measure!

But there was also a whole lot of work that happened long before the first prize was ever handed out.

Linda, along with her daughters Rye and Erica, did the lion’s share of reaching out to our local businesses and gathering the incredible donations that made our prize giveaways possible.

And our community SHOWED UP.

Because of their legwork and the generosity of so many local businesses we were able to give away prizes for kids of all ages throughout the entire Back to School Bash. Bikes, scooters, fair tickets, electronics, gift baskets and so much more.

So thank you, Stacey, Linda, Amanda, Rye, and Erica, for helping us add a whole lot of excitement to the day. And an especially big thank you to Linda, Rye, and Erica for all those phone calls, conversations, pickups, and behind-the-scenes work that most people never got to see.

You helped turn the Prize Patrol into one of the most fun parts of the Bash. ❤️

And to every local business that said “yes” when they came asking, thank you for helping us make some kids VERY happy.

⛪ It truly took a village.

One of the deepest pockets of volunteers for our Back to School Bash came from the Baker Assembly of God Church.

Pastor Rod, Pastor Jada-who, of course, we claim for the Coffeehouse too 😉-and Pastor Tucker all played vital roles in making this event happen. And this wasn’t just our pastors. So many people from Baker Assembly showed up and worked right alongside us. Steve and Sue Sieler, Bob and Marilyn Losing, Linda Rost, Troy and Jodi Hess, Bruce and Melisssa Higbee, Lisa Kilsdonk, and Rachel Dargatz hauled, set up, served, cleaned, supervised, tore down and filled in wherever we needed them. Some of them were there for hours, some came for a specific job, but every one of them made the load a little lighter

And there are two people we have to give a little extra recognition to.

Pastor Rod, Kass’s (me) dad, was quite possibly our hardest-working volunteer.

He pattied burgers with Jada and Mitch. He cleaned the food booth before the event and again afterward. He hauled tables, helped set up bounce houses, handled an incredible amount of printing and tackled countless little jobs that nobody else would ever know needed to be done.

But more than that, he was the person we went to when we needed perspective. When something wasn’t working, when we needed another set of hands, or when we just needed to talk through how we were going to pull off the next crazy piece of this event, Dad was there.

And yes, I’m his daughter, so I get to be proud of him. ❤️ But I also watched how hard he worked, and this event simply would not have been the same without him.

Then there’s Mitch, Jada’s dad, who hasn’t even lived in Baker for a year yetand somehow ended up being one of our superstar volunteers.

Apparently nobody warned him that moving to Baker might result in being recruited to patty burgers, haul things, set things up, tear things down and generally get pulled into whatever we needed. 😂

But Mitch just kept showing up.

For someone who is still relatively new to our town, he certainly didn’t act like this wasn’t his community yet. He jumped in, worked hard and helped wherever he could and that says an awful lot about a person.

These men are dads who truly show up for their daughters, even though we are grown. That feels pretty special.

The Coffeehouse organized the Back to School Bash, but we absolutely did not do it alone.

To Pastor Rod, Pastor Jada, Pastor Tucker, Mitch, the board members, church families and kids who gave their time, muscles and energy to this crazy idea of ours:

85 POUNDS.

That’s how much hamburger Steve Losing cooked for the Back to School Bash. 🍔

And he didn’t exactly show up with a little backyard grill, either. Steve hauled out this absolute beast of a setup and spent his day making sure we could feed the crowd that showed up.

Cooking 85 pounds of burgers is hot, smoky, sweaty work, especially on an August day, but Steve just got to work and kept those burgers coming.

One of the things that made this event so special was watching people bring whatever they had to give. For some it was their time. For others it was a skill, a connection, a donation, or a piece of equipment.

Steve apparently brought an industrial-sized commitment to hamburgers. 😂❤️

Steve, thank you for hauling out the big rig, standing over that grill, and feeding a whole lot of hungry kids and families. You were a huge part of making the Back to School Bash happen, and we are incredibly grateful.

85 pounds, Steve. We owe you one. 🍔😂

🏍️🚲 A Different Kind of Bike…

Our Bike Repair Station was manned by our local chapter of the Montana Christian Motorcyclists Association, The Badland Riders-a group of men and women who are normally used to tinkering on a slightly different kind of bike. 😉 Turns out, those skills transfer pretty well!

They spent the day checking bikes, making repairs, fixing tires, adjusting brakes, and helping make sure kids headed back to school with bikes that were a little safer and ready to ride. 🚲🔧

And none of it would have been possible without Baker Area Hardware.

Every single one of the bike repair supplies we needed came through them—and let me tell you, this was not an easy order to pull together. There were tubes in every imaginable size, patch kits, cables, brake pads, tools, reflectors, and all the little odds and ends we needed to be prepared for whatever rolled into the station.

But they pulled it together for us.

And on top of all of that, Baker Area Hardware donated a bike for our prize giveaways. ❤️

To the Christian Motorcyclists Association: thank you for giving us your time, your skills, and your willingness to trade motorcycles for bicycles for the day.

And to Baker Area Hardware: thank you for going above and beyond to help us make this station happen.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. This Back to School Bash truly took a community. ❤️💙💛

I’m not sure if you’ve ever tried to cut a squirming child’s hair, but if you have,and failed, like me, you can truly appreciate the skill that Kristen, Jackie, and Karlie have honed. 😂✂️

It was hot. They were outside. They weren’t in their usual shops, surrounded by the workstations and tools they’ve carefully arranged to make their jobs a little easier.

But they showed up for us anyway.

And because they did, more than 25 kids get to walk into school looking good and feeling confident. Parents get to snap that first-day-of-school picture and feel a little extra proud of the kid smiling back at them.

A haircut might seem like a small part of getting ready for school, but when you feel good about the way you look, you carry yourself a little differently. ❤️

Kristen, Jackie, and Karlie gave more than haircuts today. They gave their time, their talents, and a little boost of confidence to more than 25 kids in our community.

Thank you for showing up, working in the heat, and loving on our kids so well.

We are so incredibly grateful for you three. ✂️❤️

🚂 Some people just show up for their community again and again.

Vaughn Zenko, with the O'Fallon Historical Museum, came out to the Back to School Bash today with his little train and spent his day playing conductor, driving lap after lap around the fairgrounds, and giving kids one more reason to smile.

But if you know Vaughn, you know today wasn’t unusual.

Vaughn is one of those people who is always working to make our little piece of the world a little more special. I’m honestly not sure I’ve ever attended a community event where he wasn’t involved in some way; helping, sharing, volunteering, or finding a way to make it better.

People like Vaughn are part of what makes Fallon County feel like home.

So while we’re thanking him for bringing the train and spending his day with us, we also want to thank him for all the other days, events, projects, and moments when he has shown up for this community.

Thank you, Vaughn, for everything you do for Fallon County. We see you, and we appreciate you. ❤️🚂
