In North Carolina, every great family reunion started the night before.

By the time the first thread of dawn found the pine trees, the smoke had already settled into our clothes, our hair, and our memories.

The men had spent the night beside an old oil drum cooker, feeding glowing coals beneath a whole hog as though they were tending something sacred. Around the edges of the pit, chickens browned quietly for the men who refused to leave their post. Between checking the fire, they shuffled worn Rook cards beneath a canopy of Carolina stars, where every laugh carried farther than the smoke itself.

Morning wasn't the end.

It was when the craft began.

The pork was picked clean, chopped carefully, and dressed with vinegar and pepper until every bite carried the flavor of the long night that came before it.

Then came the family.

Children raced beneath the trees while mason jars of sweet tea caught the morning light. The tables overflowed with slaw, hushpuppies, potato salad, and desserts that never survived until evening.

I thought those reunions would last forever.

I suppose every child does.
