Researchers Discover New Way Pumpkin Fights Cancer: Pumpkin is already known to be a rich source of powerful anticancer nutrients like beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, potassium, fibre, cucurbitacins and curcumosin. But in a new surprise finding, researchers have found that a complex sugar (polysaccharide) in pumpkin fights cancer too. This natural polysaccharide is so toxic to liver cancer cells that it killed off 65% of them in a lab study by destabilizing the cancer cell’s mitochondria and triggering programmed cell death (apoptosis). So it’s no surprise that multiple population studies have linked eating pumpkin to reduced cancer risk in people. That includes 34% less breast cancer risk, 41% less lung cancer, 29% less stomach cancer and 55% less prostate cancer—all at a dose of about three servings weekly. Pumpkin is delicious roasted (with sea salt, olive oil and herbs), in soups, stews, sautéed, in salads, baked into bread, muffins and cookies, and even as a filing for pasta.

High dietary intakes of the carotenoid lutein are known to reduce the risk for at least eight different cancers. It also improves the health of our eyes and keep our brains sharper as we get older because lutein uniquely accumulates in the eyes and brain, while most other carotenoids do not. Most of our lutein comes from leafy greens like spinach and kale. But avocado is also a good source, and is quite special because the lutein is pre-dissolved in its healthy supply of monounsaturated fat. And that means we absorb lutein from avocado about 600% better than from leafy greens. So do enjoy that avocado on toast for breakfast, or plenty of guacamole as a side with lunch or dinner.

Red Pepper Compound Stops 91% of Lung Cancer in Vivo: Beta-Cryptoxanthin, found abundantly in red bell peppers, was shown in this study to reduce the number of lung tumors by 91% in mice. It also markedly improved their survival: after 100 days all non-treated mice had died, but incredibly 94% of the mice being fed beta-cryptoxanthin were still alive. But does this compound offer real health benefits to people? According recent population studies, those with diets high in beta-cryptoxanthin had 55% less risk of lung cancer, 62% less breast cancer, 51% less aggressive prostate, 63% less pharyngeal cancer and 20% less throat . Other studies even suggest this super-nutrient may help keep us mentally sharper as we age. Red bell peppers are the best dietary source, but other good sources are butternut squash, mandarin oranges, pumpkin, persimmons, and navel oranges. Cayenne , paprika and powder are also extremely concentrated sources. Bottom line: try to get at least three to five servings of beta-cryptoxanthin rich foods per week. Red peppers are great in salads, vegetable smoothies, roasted, grilled, stir-fried, in curries, stews or just plain raw.
