For many years, 602 North Highland was just another storefront. In the corner where the Eagles Nest is, there used to be a hair salon, there was also a sandwich shop, a grocery store, and a bicycle shop in the rest of the building. Businesses came and went until a pair of Lebanese immigrants turned their brotherhood into a business partnership and bought the store front to begin a new legacy for the address.

Sandwiched in time between my grandpa Manuel and great uncle Robert opening this place, to saying "mornin' boss!" to my dad in the quiet in-betweens of his early opening shifts and my late closing shifts, the windows of this restaurant have looked out to the same street for 70 years of Atlanta's history.

To quote Muppets Christmas Carol, "Life is made of meetings and partings." Manuel's has been in the background of so many of them. My dad, for example, has lost his brothers, his father, his mother, but met the love of his life here, he brought his babies here, who now bring their babies here.

This restaurant has been the city's living room. People tell me all the time they met the love of their life here, or that my grandpa served them their first *underage* beer (we don't do that anymore!), that their parents had their first date here, or that this was their first job, or ask if Bobby Agee still works here (he does!) As plain as it sounds, this restaurant wouldn't be here without you all.

We don't know what the future looks like, but for now, we're gonna celebrate that we made it this far, and to celebrate, we open the doors wide and hold our beer glasses high to the people of Atlanta to come celebrate with us.

Thank you for letting us be part of your Atlanta for 70 years ❤️ ain't nobody don't like this life is crazy!

Manuel’s Tavern will celebrate its 70th Anniversary with a thank you to its customers and community. The celebration starts on Thursday, August 6th, the actual date of our anniversary, and will last through Sunday, August 9th, 2026.

Steeply discounted food specials will be offered all day, the band Seed and Feed Marching Abominable will perform, along with the band The Four O’Clocks, and a one-man circus act on stilts. We will also have two different 70th anniversary shirts available, one classic in style and one designed by R. Land, the well-known intown artist.

Opened on August 6th, 1956, by Manuel Maloof, who would later serve as Dekalb County Chairman and CEO, the tavern serves as a centerpiece of the intown neighborhoods, its clientele representing the diversity these neighborhoods offer. The tavern has cultivated generations of journalists, cops, politicians, sports fans, political junkies, students, professors, actors, musicians, and artists.

Manuel’s Tavern is still proudly owned and operated by the Maloof family.
