It’s you, a beer, and this. Right here. Savannah’s ring of fire turkey sandwich. She’s put Swiss, arugula, our tellicherry aioli, bacon, and her sage-habanero-pineapple jelly on our freshly sliced turkey atop some toasted sourdough. Flip raves “I love it” (he hates everything and if you knew what he liked, you’d lose your minds. Beware!). It’s a special. It is special. It’s a damn delight.

Today! We will show the champions league final upstairs at noon (it seems like an arsenal kinda day?). And we will begin hanging our World Cup flags. And we will eat and drink and be merry. And we will see you soon.

You were born here and Athens was your whole tiny world. You grow some and start hearing tales of other places. And you change here and there. And you finish with school and get a sickness in your heart that you can’t explain. And Athens shrinks. Clinging to you. Your favorite restaurant seems narrow. Too familiar. Your favorite beer too predictable. Your friends too used to your humor and the stories you’ve made together. So you venture away. To maybe forget someone. To places that don’t know you. With languages you can’t learn. And faces so pretty you’ll think of them years later. And works of art that you only dreamt you’d be able to stand in front of. And spices that send you flying and the thought you couldn’t share them with everyone you ever met destroys you. But time continues. And for the first time you feel a bit of the years you have in your bones. And you miss Athens. And you miss knowing when to swerve the pothole that ruptured your right front tire a couple times. And you miss the wind tunnel up lumpkin. And you missed people missing you. And knowing your old favorites. And you missed surprising people with the new things in your life. And you want to show them what you’ve seen though it will surely bore them. But you only want to show them because you never really wanted to be away from them. And you want to know how they’ve been. And you realize that Athens is its own world. As vast as you need it to be. As small as it is. And it’s full of the most beautiful ones. The where have they been all your life ones. The ones you still can’t hardly look in the eye. And your favorite flavors. And the look of downtown on a blue sky clear eyed morning. And the perfume of the globe when the chairs are still stacked after a long busy night. And the peace of five points when those summer Sundays roll through. And the fun of normaltown when a late night there happens to be what the whole town demands to escape a bit of bustle. And the sound of the train that floats on those early hours. And you shrink your life purposely. And a world that started so small becomes so small again. And you like the way Athens folds around you and cares for you.

There’s that point in the day when the sun bounces off the buildings just so and it finds its way in through the windows and the soft light falls right through their hair and brushes their chin and hits their fingertips and through their glass and the golden glow of the lager within it brightens up the worn wooden table tops and the bartender has dimmed the lights within the globe to that nearly uncomfortably dim point and that wonderful happy melancholic hour begins and the glasses clink and the restaurant sounds hum along and the whispers and fretting and howling laughter spill out of those meeting after work or with the day off or those without a care or those with too many and those in love or newly out of it and the muses gather in corners and the poets pine and the sirens sit on the patio and draw in those drifting along lumpkin street and a familiar song plays and you’ve always liked it and it reminds you of that moment many springs ago within the same four walls and you remember as your eyes met through the crowd and the song swelled and the world stopped moving around you and it changed your very nature and maybe that moment never ended and youre still wrapped within that split second in which you realized that someone you’d just seen happened to be everything you never knew you could possibly need til all worlds end. Or maybe not. You do love a happy hour at the globe though.

Jazz tonight with Mary and the Hot Hotty Hots! Come along.

Thank god! The big sale finally went through…again. April always brings such good news.

March is nearly over in Athens. A winter morning. A summer afternoon. A spring evening. Every morning you need the hottest coffee that jittery joes will sell you. But by the afternoon you’re hounding condor for the coldest milkshake they make. The pollen has crept up behind you. Suffocated you. Knocked you over. Covered your clothes. Dusted your car. Settled atop your afternoon patio kolsch. Spring is right there. Right over there and you can feel it. A faint sweetness blends with a cigarette and the perfume of caramelizing onions from an Athens kitchen and it drifts around you and brings back your desire to try every new flavor in town. That desire never leaves you but through winter you find yourself doing what you’re convinced is easy, simple and comforting. From the globe patio, you look down lumpkin street and still see the oak trees from campus swaying and bending in the late march wind. Telling you the seasons are changing. So you’re changing too. A few bad habits out the door but you might keep one for old times sake (sue me). And maybe you’ll start a new bad habit just to keep yourself on your toes. Winter was longer than you’d expected. And while you love Christmas time and its magic, there’s just something about spring. It’s damn lovely. And maybe you say hello to strangers and old friends again. And to the shop owners that walk by on their way to open athens up each morning. And maybe you can just about see your youth again. And maybe your eyes start to brighten. And maybe the sun starts to heal your wintered skin. And maybe you can see your smile reflected in the downtown windows again. And maybe you smile cause of their smile. And you think about how nice that is to feel that way. And maybe it’s cause of spring. Or maybe it’s them. Or maybe it’s Athens.

Happy St Patrick’s Day! Plenty of Guinness. A few drops of whiskey. Laughter aplenty. Food for your bones. Music for your ears. Come happy. Leave happy. All good things.

The Donner Party will play the Pogues at 5pm and 9pm. We wish them luck and health as they play for their 18th year. Not sure why it became a tradition but we love it though we hate them with all our hearts. Come sing along or yell obscene things.

Also, please be safe now and forever. When you leave our doors, leave with a friend. Love to all.
