I feel like this is something that needs to be explained every so often, so here we go!
When you order a custom cake from a home baker, you are NOT ordering the same cake you can walk into Walmart or Kroger and pick up out of a display case.
And before anybody gets offended, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with buying a grocery store cake! But you cannot compare the two when it comes to pricing.
When you order from me, your cake is made FROM SCRATCH. No box mixes, no premade buckets of icing, and no cakes sitting around waiting for somebody to buy them.
I’m buying the ingredients, baking your layers, making your fillings and buttercream, stacking, filling, decorating, cleaning up the mess, and sometimes spending HOURS making sure every little detail is just right.
And let’s not forget the cost of butter, eggs, flour, sugar, cake boards, boxes, decorating supplies, electricity, and everything else that goes into running a small baking business.
You’re also paying for my TIME. And believe me, some of these cakes take a whole lot more time than people realize!
Walmart and Kroger produce cakes on a much larger scale. I’m ONE person, in ONE kitchen, making YOUR cake specifically for YOU.
When you send me a picture of a cake with 47 different decorations, three different colors, a special filling, and a dozen little details, please understand that all of that takes time and costs money. 😂
I don’t just pull a cake out of the freezer, slap some icing on it, and call it a day!
I’m not trying to compete with grocery store prices because I’m not selling grocery store cakes.
I completely understand that everybody has a budget, and I will never make someone feel bad for what they can or cannot afford. But please don’t make a small business owner feel like they’re overcharging simply because you can get a cheaper cake somewhere else.
I love what I do, and I put a whole lot of work into every order that leaves my kitchen. ❤️
And at the end of the day, if Walmart can make that cake for $30, by all means, buy it there! But please don’t expect me to make a $150 custom cake for $30. 😂
