Grifola frondosa // aka Hen of the Woods or known in Japan as Maitake or 'dancing mushroom' is one of the meatiest mushrooms out there. They are at peak harvest in Western New York currently and can be found at the base of hardwoods, often large, old oaks and sometimes maples of great stature! Eat Wild ! Eat Well !

mycological word(s) of the day // Remants of The Universal Veil:: The universal veil is a membranous covering that encapsulates a mushroom in its early stages of development. As the mushroom matures, the veil ruptures and disintegrates, but it usually leaves behind remnants that indicate its former shape. These remnants can include a Volva or cup-like structure at the base, often underground. Other remnants include patches or warts left as easily removable flakes on the cap as well as an Annulus or ring/skirt left on the stripe or stem usually closer to the cap then the base. Pictured are white  flaky remants on the cap, or Pileus, of an Amanita muscaria var. guessowii found in Erie County, New York, August 2024
