Have you ever heard of a Cold Cheese Slice? 🍕🧀
It starts with a piping-hot New York cheese slice, finished with a generous handful of cold, shredded mozzarella. As you eat it, the cheese underneath stays hot and melted while the mozzarella on top remains cool, gradually softening into the slice.
The story reportedly began at Tino’s Pizza in Oneonta, New York, in 1985. A customer thought his slice was too hot and asked for some cold mozzarella on top so he could eat it right away. The unusual request caught on with local college students, who later brought the tradition home to Long Island.
Little Vincent’s Pizza in Huntington eventually made the Cold Cheese Slice a late-night New York icon—and now it has a devoted following of its own.
