Edited with clarified information and Wheland family document. (I mistranslated a couple things)…
NEWLY UNCOVERED, EXCITING HISTORICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE STORE:
Since buying the store on April 1, 1994, I have had little historical information as far as the true age of this store. The most I have had to go from is this old photo from approximately 1910 because the courthouse does not have property records dating back further. I have always presumed the store dated earlier than 1910 due to the broken window you can see in the upstairs. The family pictured in this photo is that of James Floyd Wheland. He is holding the baby. James was the great grandfather to our own local, Ivan Lee. Ivan has shared historical tidbits with me over the years, and he called me one day and told me he uncovered some information about the store in some family documents. Thanks to Ivan, I now know that the Wheland family bought the store in 1889. James F. Wheland’s father, John Henry Wheland, bought the store on November 3, 1889 from Fred Farley (a name I had not yet ever discovered in the history of this swell, old place). John H. Wheland owned and operated the store from 1889 to 1910 (21 years). His son, James, then took over the store from 1910 until sometime in the 1920’s when George Smith bought it and affectionately deemed it “Some swell place.” Rose Waldman can you help me with the dates?
Ivan is not certain when the store was built, but he told me the village was incorporated in 1855. So sometime between 1855 and 1889, Fred Farley either bought or built this place!!!! I am so excited to get a little more knowledge of the age and history of the store. Even if we date back only to 1889, that would make the building 137 years old!!!! Wow! And she’s probably a little older depending on whether Fred built it that year or actually ran it a few before selling to the Wheland family. What a long, rich history.
Without factual information, I would venture a guess that I am the longest running owner at over 32 years. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know in the comments! I am pretty proud of the accomplishment either way.
Special thanks to Ivan Lee and Cory Faust, both descendants of the Wheland family, for sharing this information.
