Our Roaster's Pick of the month is the Tanzania Mwika Peaberry... but what IS a peaberry?

Peaberry coffee is the result of a mutation that occurs naturally during the coffee growing process. Typically two beans grow within one coffee cherry, but peaberries are built different; There’s only ONE bean in the cherry. This lone bean grows small, dense and round. Like a pea! 🫛

Peaberry coffee is NOT a specific variety that one can grow intentionally. The mutation only occurs in 5-10% of global coffee harvests. Farmers don’t know which coffee cherries have a peaberry inside, so they must be sorted by hand.

Does all this hard work result in a flavor that’s special? Absolutely! The round shape of a peaberry coffee means it roasts more evenly than a regular coffee bean. When comparing peaberry coffee to regular beans, we notice that peaberry coffees tend to be brighter with a more focused flavor.

While you can’t bake these berries into a pie (that’s territory), you can enjoy a freshly roasted and brewed peaberry coffee right here in Ann Arbor! ☕️

This month's Roaster's Pick coffee is a single-origin peaberry from Tanzania, renowned for its rich, volcanic soils and abundance of rainfall - ideal conditions for growing coffee.

It comes to us from Mwika North, a cooperative established in 1984. Mwika North became one of the first organic certified producer groups in the Kilimanjaro region, known for game reserves and large coffee estates. The producers still take pride in following organic farming standards.

This coffee is full-bodied and crisp with fruit flavors that remind us of apricot and peach! 🍑 🇹🇿
