The City of Andalusia was honored to host the Andalusia High School Football Hall of Fame induction this afternoon.
Honored were (from left) David Anthony, Allan George, Sidney White, and Paul Godwin. J. Harrison McCraw was honored posthumously.
David Anthony, # 19, was a three-year letterman (1974-1976) and two-year starter at Andalusia High School. He started at defensive back for Andalusia’s 1975 State Runner-Up team. In 1976, he played quarterback and led the Bulldogs to a State Championship, directing an offense that averaged 32 points per game. During Anthony’s three varsity seasons, the Bulldogs compiled a 36-2-1 record. He played for AHS during the historic 58-game winning streak and never lost a game at Andalusia Memorial Stadium. Anthony’s athletic accomplishments extended beyond football, as he was also a four-year letterman in golf at AHS. He graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Anthony is Managing Director and Senior Vice President, Investments, with Muirfield Private Wealth Management of Raymond James.
Allan George, #1, helped lead AHS to a 12–2 record and the 2016 Class 4A State Semifinals. As a senior, he recorded 49 tackles and seven interceptions, tying for the state lead, while also scoring four touchdowns on offense and special teams. He was named First Team All-State Defensive Back by the Alabama Sports Writers Association and earned All-Region honors. George also excelled in basketball and track, finishing second in the state in the triple jump. George signed a football scholarship with Vanderbilt University, where he became a multi-year starter in the secondary and was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll. His Vanderbilt career included a game-saving interception against Missouri and a 67-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Kentucky. In 2022, George signed with the Cincinnati Bengals and contributed to the Bengals’ run to the AFC Championship Game. His professional career also included time with the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions.
Paul Godwin, #58, dubbed “Golden Toe Godwin” by the Montgomery Advertiser, was a four-year letterman and three-year starter for AHS in football. A member of the undefeated 1958 State Championship team, he earned All-South Alabama Conference honors in 1957 and 1958 and was named First Team All-State in 1958. An outstanding multi-sport athlete, Godwin was also a six-year starter in baseball, earning First Team All-State honors in 1959, and lettered in basketball and track. He later played professional baseball in the San Francisco Giants organization, advancing to Triple-A. Godwin went on to a successful coaching career, earning multiple Coach of the Year honors and leading Florala to a State Runner-up finish in 1973. He returned to AHS in 1985, serving as defensive coordinator and head baseball coach through 1997.
Dr. J. Harrison McCraw, #25, was a three-year football letterman at AHS. In 1961, he was named Andalusia’s Best Blocking Back, First Team All-State by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, and Honorable Mention All-State by the Birmingham Post. An outstanding all-around athlete, he also starred in baseball and basketball. McCraw signed a football scholarship with Auburn University, where he was a three-year letterman at running back. After graduating from Auburn, he served in the U.S. Army, including a tour in Vietnam. He later earned an MBA from Auburn and a Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Georgia. Dr. McCraw enjoyed a distinguished academic career as a professor in accounting at the University of West Georgia, and authored numerous articles published in scholarly journals.
Sidney White, Sr., #35, known as the “Sidney Express,” was a three-year letterman and three-year starter for AHS, playing on both offense and defense. A versatile player, he returned kicks and punts while also playing linebacker and running back. In 1995, White was named Andalusia’s Best Running Back. During his senior season, he rushed for more than 1,500 yards, scored 17 touchdowns, was chosen as Permanent Team Captain and was selected to play in the North-South All-Star Game. In 1996, he was named First Team All-State Running back by the Birmingham News and the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Following his outstanding career at AHS, White received a football scholarship to Alabama State University.
