Re-opening delayed!
Like most Alaskans understand, we are at the mercy of our environment, and that includes this little box from the 1960’s. The past few days brought a big swing in temperatures that caused the building to shift enough to sever a gas line (fixed) and jack up our plumbing (not fixed yet). Repairs are underway, we’re prepped and ready, and we will reopen as soon as possible. Sorry we won’t see you tomorrow as planned. Keep us in your prayers or if you don’t pray, keep us in your swear words.

We hope these then-and-now pics give you an idea of the history of the little building we’ve called home for four exciting years. We’re guessing the first pic is from the 1980’s based on the truck and hairdo (the hairdid, indeed…anyone know who that is?). Pretty cool that after all these years we brought real sourdough back to Sourdough’s.

Do you drive the Seward Highway between Anchorage and Girdwood? Please consider attending a public hearing to learn about the big changes planned and how they will impact the future of your commute and your community. As business owners in this zone we are in full support of a safer highway for all drivers. We are eager for improvements and also anxious to learn if the project may reduce access to our business. Show of hands: Who wants a left turn lane to our parking lot? Join us to attend one of these meetings:
Jan 13 Girdwood Library
Jan 14 Anchorage Library
Jan 15 Valley Bible Chalet, Indian
Meeting - 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

It might be cold here but local art is on fire in the Four Valleys. We’d like to introduce you to an artist from right here in Bird Creek. She’s a potter, climber, teacher, mom extraordinaire, and all-around superhero, Lydia Martin of

You might recognize her as a barista at Birch & Alder for the past few years before she left to follow her dream and start her own pottery studio. Her beautiful bowls, vases, plates, mugs, and objects of art have a minimal, modern aesthetic with warm, organic forms that feel good to look at and to hold in your hands. We have a limited run of her high-quality mugs with the Birch & Alder brandmark to sell to our lovely customers just in time for the holidays.

If you’ve visited our tiny dining room you’ve seen the work of local artists and beautify our walls. We’re psyched to add to our space and to your home.

Stop in to pick up a mug and a treat on the way to your winter adventures. Follow to see more of her work and stay updated on upcoming projects and markets.
