I just heard that they are starting to tear down Creekside today and all week. I guess it’s fitting that it’s St. Patrick’s Day. We had a lot of fun parties there! 🍀🍻🥹

One year ago today we were cleaning out Creekside. They hurried us out. Who is “they”? The Village of Algonquin. We were supposed to go to closing on Saturday the 23rd. But then they said we needed to close on the 22nd. I had asked for ONE MORE WEEK. They refused. The lawyers said “They have plans.” And yet, one year later the building is still standing. It’s so sad.

Unless you were a part of our Creekside Family, you might not understand the connection we had, nor the importance of that little bar. Beginning in May of 2011, we started serving a complimentary food buffet for every holiday. We realized early on that we had a lot of folks who had nowhere to go for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Every year our crowd grew. It wasn’t long before people who could have gone elsewhere were coming to Creekside and bringing food, too! Every holiday was so much fun!

So many friendships were forged at the Creek, and some were also lost, I’m sure. Many people who met there, got married! And, just as with all families, we lost many as well. Weddings and funerals…all part of this game of life. We forged friendships there that will last the rest of our lives.

For the most part, the women and men who worked for us over the years were THE best!! I learned a lot from them. Most were seasoned bartenders when we hired them, and I know working for us was a little different than what they were used to. Others were newbies and after a little bit of training, we threw them into the deep end of the pool. And they all succeeded! They all succeeded because they cared about Creekside and ran their shifts like it was their own business. We trusted them and, with just a few exceptions over 13 years, they all deserved our trust. They built our business and we supported them. Win/ win!

I had such high hopes for Creekside 2. It was such a perfect solution. Our bartenders all had guaranteed jobs. Our family had the same local, convenient place to go. Algonquin would have had another fun, vibrant, successful business in town. How many people know why Creekside 2 never got off the ground? I’ll tell you why. I’ve been quiet for a year, but now I’ll tell you what I know. The folks who were going to open C2 asked the Village first if there would be any problem getting a liquor license. They were told that it wouldn’t be a problem. What the Village failed to make clear is that it wouldn’t be a problem as long as they did everything the Village demanded. So, instead of a nice, quaint, local tavern, the Village required that they 1) put in a full kitchen; 2) be a sit-down restaurant, focusing on food rather than a bar 3) they had to approve the menu. They presented a menu focusing on soups, sandwiches and salads. They purchased kitchen equipment. They designed and redisgned blueprints to try to meet the Village’s requirements. They had purchased most of our decor, tables, chairs, etc. to give C2 somewhat of the same ambience as Creekside, but of course with a brand new build out. They even went so far as to pay the bartenders a modest salary to hold onto them while remodel work was completed. All of this cost a lot of money, but they were willing to make that investment because future earnings were forecast to be worth it. But after all of this, the Village said a soup, sandwich and salad menu wasn’t good enough. Oh, and by the way, you MIGHT get your gaming license in a year. WHAT??? You see, this Village Board doesn’t like gaming machines. They would like to eliminate them. So, for the Algonquin businesses that have them, this should be a huge concern. If they eliminate them, your customers will go to LITH, Carpentersville, Crystal Lake and the Dundees. And for the folks who enjoy playing them in their favorite bars, remember, these are elected officials. You have the power to vote them out.

I went through hundreds of pictures to add to this post. I chose many at random because it was pretty hard to see them through the tears. In the end, I guess I chose too many to post, because I couldn’t upload them. I wanted to avoid the pics from this day one year ago, because the wound is still tender and I can’t look at them. They are undoubtedly some of the saddest pics ever. Our once lively, fun and vibrant bar was dark, empty and cold. It still sits there, a reminder of what it once was. I have people text from time-to-time, telling me how sad it looks and how the Village is letting it become overgrown and deteriorating. But, they wouldn’t give me one more week…

I can never say thank you enough to all of the people who came into our lives and who made Creekside Tap what it was. It may not seem like much to some people reading this, but I can tell you from my heart that it meant something to so many people over the years. I love you and miss you all so much! I’m sorry that the group has had to scatter and try to find another home. But time marches on! I’m sending loving, holiday greetings to everyone! I hope 2025 brings all good things to you and yours! ~ Val

Hello, Creeksiders! I miss posting everyday. I’m definitely going through withdrawals. Yesterday helped with seeing so many friends at Bolt on Inn! You are all amazing! We can keep our family together by visiting with our beautiful bartenders at their other locations until Creekside 2 is open! Kelly O is at Bolt every Wednesday. Kelly Jo is at Huntley Legion every Monday. Christy is at VFW in Dundee every Friday and Saturday. Hannah is at Matt’s Tavern, but I don’t know her regular hours there. And Tiffany is at Cattleman’s, but I don’t know her hours. Thank you for supporting these amazing women! And, if anyone else will be working somewhere, please let everyone know.

I do have to mention the fact that the Village of Algonquin, not only “needed” to finalize the sale on 12/23, but actually made us finalize it on 12/22 by 7:00 pm. We busted our asses to get the bar cleared out as much as possible. Now here’s a surprise: they haven’t done squat. We could have given our bartenders a few more days to make money, and we could have had more time with our Creekside family. So unnecessary to kick us out early. Remember, these are elected officials. Keep that in mind next time you vote. ~ val

Happy Saturday! Aw, who am I kidding! It’s a SAD Saturday! My favorite bar is gone. It’s been our life for 13 years! Absolutely everything we’ve done for the past 13 years has revolved around Creekside. Even when we were in Florida, we were still taking care of business. Yesterday was the day we had to clear out the bar. We had so many people show up to lend a hand. It was a 12 hour day. Lots of coming and going. Between Thursday and Friday I heard countless stories from people saying how much our bar meant to them. I heard stories from people who said they were in a bad place in life when they found Creekside. They told me how the warm welcome they received, the hugs and new found friendships helped them navigate the rough times, and they loved our little bar for helping them at a time when they really needed it. We’ve helped people out with loans when they needed help, and we developed friendships with the people who paid us back and we value their friendship and integrity. I had one gentleman tell me that the thing he loved about Creekside is that there is no judgement. Everyone accepts everyone, no matter the differences. We had a gentleman reach out to us because he met his fiancé in the bar and he wanted to make a gift for her by taking up some of the flooring where he first saw her and creating a keepsake. So many people wanted some type of memento, and we were able to accommodate most requests, I think. Yesterday is a blur. We shed lots of tears, but thankfully, the Universe helped us out with several comedic episodes that had us doubled over laughing! Not everything went as smoothly as we had hoped. Com Ed shut off the electricity around 10:30 in the morning. That proved challenging as it was a super cloudy day. People were trying to remove things from our very old, dark, kind of creepy basement. The big project of removing the granite bar top was made even more difficult in the dim lights. One friend had a generator that started right up at home, and started briefly in the bar. Just long enough to engulf us with gas fumes, and after moving it outside, it died. Another friend brought in some lights in anticipation of having a generator, but couldn’t stick around. Another friend went home and got some battery-powered lights, and while they were very helpful, as it got darker they weren’t bright enough. So, another friend went home to get a generator which had worked well all summer, but just wouldn’t work when he tried it. So he brought back lots of extension cords. The Village has lighted Christmas decorations all up and down Main Street. So this friend went to the nearest lit up reindeer, unplugged it and plugged in the extension cord. Voila! We had lights! That was a huge belly laugh for us all, that we desperately needed! Finally the bar top was removed and carried outside. We all said tearful goodbyes. I do feel bad that we left a lot of trash and stuff behind. Our dumpster was overflowing. If I would have had an extra couple of days, I could have cleared it all out. Everyone says don’t feel bad. They’re just going to bulldoze it. Still, it isn’t in my nature to leave a mess. Oh well. I’ve been reading all of the posts and enjoying all the pics from everyone. Just when I think I’m done crying, the emotions overtake me again. I’ll have lots of pics to share as well, once I have time to sort through them. Thank you, everyone for sharing your memories and your love. You are the most amazing souls. I’m grateful our paths have crossed and hope they cross again! 💞💞💞🙏🙏🙏 If I missed tagging anyone from yesterday, I🤗🤗
