Royal Nepal, 3807 Mount Vernon Avenue, in Alexandria, turned Labor Day into a day of service.
The Zebra stopped by the Mount Vernon Avenue restaurant on Thursday to talk with the owners about the special fundraiser, during which the Royal Nepal team did not take the day off for a family picnic, but instead worked solely to raise money for families devastated by the catastrophic flooding and mudslides in Nepal.
Thanks to customers from Alexandria and across the DMV, the restaurant raised $6,150 for the Nepal relief effort—and wrote the donation check today.
“We really appreciate the outpouring of support from the community,” the owners told The Zebra.
The disaster began Aug. 26, when the collapse of part of a glacier sent an enormous mass of rock and mud into a river along the Nepal-Tibet border. The resulting flash floods swept through communities, destroying homes, roads, bridges and hydropower facilities. More than 1,300 people were reported killed across Nepal and Tibet, with thousands still missing.
Thank you to everyone who supported Royal Nepal’s fundraiser and helped turn one local day of work into meaningful assistance for people facing unimaginable loss thousands of miles away.
That is Alexandria at its best.
